Local Notes: Enniscrone Bridge Club play for the Freeman Trophy

The Freeman Trophy Competition was held over 2 nights on February 14 and 21. There was a great turnout on both nights with 30 members participating, 71/2 tables with the overall winner being Francis Walkin. The death took place of John McDermott, Faranoo, Ballina, and formerly of Enniscrone, Co Sligo, peacefully at Mayo Roscommon Hospice following a short illness surrounded by his family.
John is predeceased by his baby daughter Deirdre, his parents Michael and Mary, brother Eddie, brothers-in-law Mike McGowan and Jerry Reynolds. He was the beloved husbnd of Mary and father of Louise (Shrule), Michael (Ennis), Ronan (Calgary) and Brian (Galway). He will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren Ben and Jack, daughter-in-law Ira, Ronans partner Alicia, Louise’s partner Pat, sisters Maura McGowan and Carmel Reynolds, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
John reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Sunday evening, March 17, from 5 to 6.30pm, and his funeral arrived to St Muredach’s Cathedral for Requiem Mass on Monday morning at 11.30am. His burial took place afterwards to St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass, Enniscrone. May John rest in peace.
MLC (student language programmes) are looking for great host families in the Sligo area this summer to host International students. They pay fantastic rates and have a full team to support 24/7. Enniscrone Kilglass Community Games are holding their athletics event on Sunday, April 28, at 2pm, at Quigabar GAA pitch. This is for running, hurdles, long puck and throw ball.
Enniscrone Kilglass Community Games extend thanks to The Ocean Sands Hotel who have generously donated €500 to them. The money will go a long way towards purchasing new kits or equipment for the group which is expanding every year. It is great to see so many children and young people taking part in more and more events each year, and Enniscrone Kilglass Community Games are proud of all their achievements.

Well done to Ryan Tuffy, Enniscrone Kilglass GAA Club, who won the National School Place Kicking competition representing Scoil Chriost Ri, Enniscrone, after a playoff and kicking all points with his weaker foot.
Enniscrone Kilglass GAA club are running a 1 day Easter GAA Camp on Thursday, March 28, from 10am to 2pm at Quigabar for children aged 5-12 years. The cost is €20 per child. Eoghan Rua Ladies Football Club congratulate their member Fiona Feeney who is the winner of the GOWA Sportswear and Teamwear Sligo LGFA Player of the Month for February. The Eoghan Rua player starred for her team in the recent Paidi O’Se tournament helping guide them to victory. Fiona picked up Intermediate Player of the Tournament on the day.
Enniscrone Events and Black Pig Festival extended thanks to all participants and the large amount of spectators that came out on St Patrick’s Day for the parade and especially the children that took part and the stewards. They thank Tony Connaughton, the Grand Marshal for 2024; Frank Igoe, Igoe Quality Meats, who is resident St Patrick; Mary Clare, MC and Pat Boyle for the tunes and the truck from West Coast Express; and to Checkout Enniscrone, Ocean Sands Hotel, the Diamond Coast Hotel, and Cllr Joe Queenan for supplying the refreshments in the Old Church afterwards.
Cuchulainn, the legendary warrior/hurler, and his hound led the group of warriors/hurlers at the Easkey St Patrick’s Day parade. The sun shone on all and it was a great day. Well done to the organisers of this year events especially LEAP Project, Easkey and Easkey Enhancement Association. It was great community spirit all round. Well done to the children and mammies who made shields and costumes, and to all who walked and helped out in so many ways, to the senior hurlers who brought along their County and Connacht Cups; and finally to the local national schools who took part in the themed wordsearch and colouring last week.

The Indoor Food and Craft Market will continue each Saturday in The Old Church, Enniscrone, from 11am to 3pm. It features a wide range of handmade gifts, paintings, home baking, fresh vegetables, bric a brac and local crafts.
Training takes place on Monday evenings from 6 to 6.45pm on the astro for 8 to 9 year olds; 6.45 to 7.30pm on the astro for 10-17 year olds and at 7pm Fit 4 life in the West Sligo Family Resource Centre. On Wednesday evening, training is held from 6 to 6.45pm on the astro for 5 to 7 year olds and on Thursdays at 8pm for Fit4Life in the West Sligo Family Resource Centre.
Enniscrone Kilglass Gaelic 4Mothers&Others are back for their 7th season. Before they took their break their numbers were growing each week. They hope to get all the ladies back training on Monday evenings at 8pm in the indoor astro Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA pitch. They are looking for new members to join their amazing group. If you are interested, why not come along on the night. No previous experience is needed, you must be over 25 years old, it is suitable for all fitness levels and it is a great way to meet new people, have some fun and get fit. The West Sligo Young at Heart Club in Dromore West Community Centre are back in full swing on Monday with exercises from 11 to 12 and walking football. On Tuesday there is chair yoga from 12 noon to 1pm and on Wednesdays, sewing is held between 10.30 and 12.30pm, whether you want to learn how to alter clothing or make something new, knit or crochet, it is all going on. The kettle is on and biscuits waiting, so why not head to Dromore West Community Centre.

Castleconnor.
Castleconnor Amateur Dramatic Society are very grateful following their very successful St Patrick’s weekend performances of The Country Boy, which was held in Castleconnor Community Centre. They had laughter, tears, standing ovations, plenty of tea and above all entertainment at its finest.
The cast and crew are thanked for their fantastic performance and the work they put into it; the family of John Murphy, the author of the play, who gave everyone lots of insights into his life and even a few props in the form of pictures; and finally thanks to the audiences who came on the three nights, everyone had a blast.
The numbers drawn in the Castleconnor GAA lotto which was held on Saturday, March 16, were 2, 25, 29 and 33. Congratulations to Donovan Ogle and Lisa Egan who match 3 numbers and both won €100 each. Also congratulations to Stephen Maughan who was the winner of the €50 lucky dip prize. The latest jackpot in the draw which was held on Saturday, March 23, was €20,800.
