‘Medieval Mayo’ book launch

The importance of Mayo’s ecclesiastical and archaeological heritage is outlined in the book ‘Medieval Mayo - Churches and Abbeys’ by the late Dr Peter Harbison. The book will be launched in Ballintubber Abbey on Thursday, April 18, at 6 pm, hosted by Mayo County Council. Medieval Mayo presents a selection of the county's monuments created during the thousand years from 600 to 1600AD and captures not just the wealth of Mayo’s religious medieval monuments, but also their wonderful landscape settings. Some of the most interesting early examples are found in islands off the Mullet peninsula and the type of structures altered with time such as the Romanesque style seen in the Augustinian house of Cong and Ballintubber Abbey.

Major reward for information

Following four robberies on rural licensed premises in Tourmakeady and Killawalla, Westport publicans have decided to put up a reward of €10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the criminals involved. Gardaí are investigating the burglaries at three premises in Tourmakeady and one in Killawalla, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 5. A quantity of money was taken from all four premises. Breaffy Ballyheane Belcarra.

Alan is a Minister of State

Congratulations to Alan Dillon on his appointment to the position of Minister of State at the Department of Housing. It is a great achievement by Alan in his 1st term in the Dáil and a most memorable occurrence for his family and his staff and many friends. Alan will have responsibility for planning and local government in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and though the post is challenging in the limited time before a general election, undoubtedly he will bring all his talents to bear.

Those talents were obvious at the public accounts committee hearings where he carried out his role in establishing facts and what actually occurred in a highly diligent manner which gained National attention. A former Mayo and Ballintubber team captain he was in the opinion of many, one of Mayo’s greatest consistent performers during his Gaelic football career which lasted almost a score of years. He won five Mayo SFC titles with Ballintubber Club and eight Connacht SFC medals with Mayo and made 134 appearances for the county scoring a total of 3-225. Clogher.

Catch the Illegal Dumpers!

People in local communities are asked to be particularly vigilant and to report any instances of illegal dumping in the Clogher area and other local villages. There have been a number of items illegally dumped recently on The Clogher Bog Loop Walk and also in nearby Clooncundra. The communities go to great lengths to ensure their areas are always well maintained and litter free and this scandalous behaviour is totally unacceptable. Likewise the behaviour of some passing motorists in rural areas also leaves a lot to be desired as coffee cups, plastic bottles, sweet papers and all sorts of waste is just thrown out car windows. Shame - on those people, who thoughtlessly continue to litter our country roads.

Clogher cards

The result for Clogher Cards on Friday, April 5, were; 1st Joe Thomas and Eileen Moran, 2nd Mary Morrin and Pat Griffith, 3rd Majella Morrin and Margaret Mannion and Bridie McDermott and Cathal Hennelly.
