Community Christmas Fair

Thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to the success of the Community Christmas Fair held in St Brigid’s Hall, Tubbercurry on Saturday afternoon last, December 2. This was a joint fundraiser for Sligo Cancer Support Centre, Tubbercurry and St Brigid’s Hall.

A special thank you is extended to the two very special guests Santa and Mrs Claus for taking time out of their very hectic schedule to spend the afternoon with everyone in St Brigid’s Hall where Santa’s elves had set up a welcoming, cosy grotto especially for their annual visit. Thank you is also extended to the musicians Oisin McCann and the Urquhart family for their festive musical entertainment, to all the helpers and volunteers on the day including the St Brigid’s Hall committee members; to hall caretaker Seamie Brennan for all his help; to Mary Jones and her team of volunteers from the Sligo Cancer Support Centre in Tubbercurry for running the raffle and cake stall and to all the bakers for their fabulous home baking; to all those who donated raffle prizes; to each and every one of the craftspeople and stall holders for the festive colour, magic and talent they brought to St Brigid’s Hall with their beautiful handcrafted items for sale. Last but not least to everyone who came along to enjoy the atmosphere and lend their support. The committee are already looking forward to 2024 and the next Community Christmas Fair in St Brigid’s Hall.

Peter Pan’ by the Phoenix Players’

The Phoenix Players’ production of the magical pantomime ‘Peter Pan’ directed by Mark Dunne, featuring a host of wonderful local talent took place over the last two weekends. St Brigid’s Hall is a vital community amenity in Tubbercurry, providing space for a whole range of activities, from exercise classes to sean nós dancing, rehearsal space for drama productions, meeting rooms, Western Drama Festival, Old Fair Day and South Sligo Summer School events and activities, squash courts and much, much more besides. All support for the hall is greatly appreciated as the committee endeavour to continue to improve facilities there for everyone.

Seasons’ Greetings from the Cloonacool Players

Cloonacool Players thank all the audiences for their support during the All-Ireland 1-Act Festival including the Tubbercurry Western Drama Festival. Building on that first appearance, over the weeks the group gathered awards and came home with 1st place in Manorhamilton plus Best Actor award for Martin McIntyre. As well as in the previous weeks - one 2nd place and two 3rd places. The Players wish fans and theatre-goers a very Happy Christmas and look forward to entertaining you in the New Year.

Community Composting and Sensory Garden Development Workshop

Tuesday, December 12, was a day filled with learning and green goodness on Community Composting and Sensory Garden Development.

In the morning session (10am-12pm) the participants learned about Home and Community Composting with Aoife Munn, and discovering the magic of composting for a sustainable future. The afternoon session (1pm-3pm) was all about Sensory Garden Development. It was the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow garden enthusiasts. The workshop was part of the Power to Change partnership between Sligo PPN and ATU Sligo.

Gurteen

The late Francis Duffy

The death took place after a brief illness on December 3 at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin of Francis Duffy, Carrentemple, Gurteen. News of his sudden passing at just forty five years of age was received with great sadness in the community and beyond. He was a well-liked and popular young man and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. A Healing Mass had been celebrated on November 29, in Gurteen Church by Fr Joe Caulfield to a very large congregation.

Francis’s remains reposed at O'Dowds Funeral Home, Gurteen, on Wednesday last and the Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday at noon by Fr Joe Caulfield PP and burial took place afterwards at Carrentemple Cemetery.

Predeceased by his brother John in 2022, he is survived by his parents Frank and Mary, brothers Owen, Peter and Brian, sisters Sharon and Maria, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews and nieces, extended family and many friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.

The late Mary Cryan nee Beirne

The death took place on Saturday, December 2, of Mary Cryan nee Beirne, Celbridge, Kildare, and late of Tulsk, Co Roscommon. Mary was sister-in-law of Joe Cryan, Cloonloo and sympathy is extended to her husband Seamus, formerly of Derryknockeran and to her family and to the Cryan and Beirne families on their bereavement. May she rest in peace.

Carrentemple Cemetery

Carrentemple Cemetery committee thank everyone who contributed to the collection for the maintenance and improvements for the cemetery. A total of €1,145 was collected on the day the November prayers for the dead were recited. Well done to all concerned.

Mass times for Christmas

On Sunday, December 24, the Mass will be at 11am instead of the usual 11.30am. On Christmas Eve in Gurteen Church there will be just one Mass at 6.30pm. Christmas Day will have three Masses in the parish - Killaraght Church at 9.30am, Cloonloo Church at 10.45 and Gurteen Church at 12 noon.

Gurteen Cemetery

Gurteen Cemetery committee extends thanks to all who contributed to the collection of €3,246. The expenditure for the past year was €3,203.

Bingo

Bingo is held in Gurteen Hall every Friday night at 8pm. The jackpot of €2800 is in forty seven calls or less, the lotto raffle jackpot is €300, and there is also a 50/50 split. For the December give-away there will be extra prizes each Friday night in December. Christmas Bingo will take place on December 22. Support is greatly appreciated.

A RSS vacancy

Eastern Harps 5/50

The Eastern Harps 50/50 draw on Monday night with a jackpot of €558 was won by Padraic Higgins, Townaline, Culfadda. For the next two weeks there will be extra prizes for the Christmas draws. The club is very appreciative of all the support.

Gurteen Celtic lotto

The jackpot was not won this week and the numbers drawn were 19, 21, 23 and 26. Valerie McCormack won the €50 and the latest draw was held in Donegan's Ragwood and the jackpot was €7,000.

Eastern Harps

Congratulations and well done to Eastern Harps U20 boys who won the County U20A title on Sunday week last.

Grow is a mental health support program based on lived experience. This mean Grow groups are a meeting of peers, who are striving to develop and maintain good mental health.

This will give you an introduction to how meetings work and an opportunity to ask questions. You can also search for a group close by to you by using Find a Group and just turning up. The information centre in Bohernasup, Ballina, is open to everyone in the community. They provide options, supports and guidance for individuals and their families experiencing mental health difficulties. Enable Ireland

Enable Ireland Mayo Services require volunteers in all areas of County Mayo to work with children with a disability. Volunteers usually work one-to-one with a child within their home but also within their community or at the centre in Castlebar. Training is provided.
