Local Notes: Countdown is on in Enniscrone to annual festival

Enniscrone Tidy Towns extend thanks to all the Enniscrone Kilglass GAA members who came along to participate in the Sunday morning beach clean on Sunday, July 12.
Over 40 volunteers came along and did a great job of ensuring any litter, etc, was collected from the beach and dunes. A super win for everybody.
Thanks was also extended to Offshore Coffee and More who provided free coffee and ice-creams to all the participants especially as it was such a busy sunny Sunday morning.
There will be so much to do in Enniscrone from July 23 to 27, with a jam-packed programme organised by the Enniscrone Events and Black Pig Festival committee, so make sure to come along and make memories. It promises to be a fun weekend for all the family.
The official opening will take place from 4 to 7pm on Thursday, July 23 with The Taste of Enniscrone at The Old Church. There will be live music with Rosie Connolly, and the roasting of the Black Pig. Purchase Enniscrone currency to taste the delights.
A busking competition will be held from 7 to 8.30pm on Main Street with judging at 8pm. The evening will finish off with an outdoor concert by All Folk’d Up at the Diamond Coast Hotel Gig Rig. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
Friday will see Beach Yoga with Karen Ann at 8am, Yoga as Gaeilge with Jenny at the Ocean Sands Hotel, children's busking for fun event on top promenade from 2 to 4.30pm, family fun nostalgic sports day at the Castlefield from 3 to 4pm, hosted by The West Sligo Family Resource Centre; Make a Kite workshop at West Sligo FRC from 4 to 5pm; Seaside Ball Race with DJ Pat Country Roadshow at Cliff Road and Waterfront House at 6pm; World Bubble Football Championship on the beach from 6 to 8pm – team entries to 089-4288476 or steven@bubblefootballireland.com; music on the Square with Relish Records DJ from 7 to 9pm and Jack Keogh live outdoor dance at Diamond Coast Hotel from 8 to 11pm, with tickets on Eventbrite.
Saturday’s events commence at 9am with Beach Yoga with Sophie, Beach Pilates at 10am with Freedom Flow Wellness; Pilates for Men with Finn in Ocean Sands Hotel at 10am; Chair Yoga with Donna in Ocean Sands Hotel at 11am; Indoor and Outdoor Enniscrone Market Day at The Old Church (prebooked traders welcome) from 11am to 2pm; Family Fun Day from 12 noon to 4pm, hosted by West Sligo FRC at the Festival Marquee at the Hollow; Kids Disco from 4.30 to 6pm at the Ocean Sands Hotel and Retro Carnival Games from 5-7pm.
The evening entertainment will commence at 8.30pm with Medium Rare Theatre performance with Niamh McGrath and Orla McSharry at the Ocean Sands Hotel, doors open at 8pm, tickets on Eventbrite; music on the Square at 8pm by Displaced and 9pm by Old Church Band; music in Gilroy’s Bar with Doppler and there will be an amazing fireworks display at the pier at 11pm.
Sunday morning will see beach yoga, beach pilates, pilates for men and chair yoga (same times as Saturday); Kiltimagh Pet Farm at the Festival Marquee in the Hollow at 11am; Sandcastles competition on the small beach with judging at 1pm, register online.
There is a trad session at 6pm in Gilroy's, Modern dance troop display at 7pm, music on the Square with Aisling and Tony from 7.30 to 9.30pm; comedians Karl Spain and Patrick Sweeney in the Ocean Sands Hotel at 7.30pm; and the Black Pig Festival Dance with Stuart Moyles will take place in the Ocean Sands Hotel at 10pm. To complete the busy weekend, Monday will commence with beach yoga at 9am with Karen Ann; Selfie Treasure Hunt from 1 to 4pm – register at Ocean Sands Hotel (fun prizes); Enniscrone Pitch n Putt event at 7pm, girls golf, tickets on Tickettailor.com.

The death took place of Eugene Ryan, Cabra, Rathlee at home, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his father Thomas, mother Margaret, brothers Tom, Padraic and Christy, sisters-in-law Dympna, Breege and Kathleen.
Eugene will be deeply regretted by his devoted wife Anna, son Padraic, daughters Breda and Catriona, son-in-law Steven, daughter-in-law Liz, brother Jim and sister-in-law Mary, heartbroken grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Eugene reposed at Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Dromore West on Sunday, July 12 from 5 to 8pm and his funeral Mass took place in the Church of the Holy Family, Kilglass at 11am, followed by burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass.
Iascaigh CLG offered their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Eugene who played with the club in the late 1950s and early 1960s and was a part of the 1960 Junior Championship winning team.

The death took place of Michael Kelly, Caltra, Culleens, on July 13, peacefully after a short illness at the Northwest Hospice, Sligo, surrounded by his loving family.
Michael was predeceased by his parents Tom and Kathleen. He was the beloved husband of Nancy and loving father of Niall, Edel, Michael and Niamh. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, Michelle Butler and Jude Gallagher, sons-in-law John Beirne and Richard Morrissey, grandchildren Tom, Ellen, Annie, Rebecca, Katie, Jack, Michael, Conor, Cialadh and Jim.
Easkey GAA Club paid tribute to Michael, stating:
"Michael devoted a lifetime of dedicated service to our club and was the very definition of a true Sea Blue, a clubman in every sense of the word. Over many decades, he fulfilled countless roles, serving on the club executive, as a county board delegate, as club groundsman, coach to numerous underage teams, and as a current club trustee. Michael received the club person of the year award in 2008. As a player, he proudly represented Easkey in both codes, always wearing the club colours with pride.
"Beyond our own club, Michael gave exceptional service to the GAA as a minor board referee and also as an umpire at many of the game’s biggest occasions, including provincial finals and an All-Ireland Senior Championship Final. His knowledge, integrity and unwavering dedication earned him the respect of all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
"Michael was a constant presence around the club, always willing to lend a hand, offer sound advice, or quietly get on with whatever was needed to be done. As groundsman for well over a decade, he took immense pride in ensuring our facilities were maintained to a high standard, giving countless hours of his time so that players of all ages could enjoy the best conditions. Kind, committed and dedicated; he embodied the values upon which the association is built. With his passing our club has lost one of its finest servants. His legacy will live on in our club and community for generations to come."
Michael reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Thursday, July 16, from 5.30 to 7pm. His funeral arrived at St James’s Church, Easkey on Friday for 12 noon Requiem Mass followed by burial in Roslea Cemetery, Easkey.

The numbers drawn in the Enniscrone combined football clubs' blotto draw held on Sunday, July 12, were 2, 36 and 44. There was no jackpot winner and the €25 prizewinners were Jackie Sweeney, Patrick Brennan, Tony Murphy and Gavin Anderson.
The jackpot in the latest draw held on July 19 in The Pilot Bar was €3,800.
The annual Grandparents Pilgrimage celebrating the 6th World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly will take place on Sunday, July 26, at Knock Shrine. Chief celebrant is Archbishop Eamon Martin.
The day will commence at 2.30pm with the Anointing of the Sick. It is a day of grace and blessing for the whole family as they honour grandparents and the elderly.
The Naughton Academy are starting a class in The Old Church in Enniscrone on September 17. Learn traditional Irish dance with Laura Naughton, two-time World Champion dancer.
Naughton Academy was established by Lisa Naughton in 2016, with sister Laura joining in 2018, and is associated with Cumann Rince Naisiunta. The classes are suitable for children aged four and older, and all abilities are welcome.
An introductory session of Over 50s Walking Football will be held this evening Tuesday, July 21, from 7 to 8pm at Dromore West Community Centre. The session is for both men and women and all abilities welcome.

The death took place of Dawn Gawley (nee Higgins), Carrowcarden, Enniscrone and formerly of Carraroe, Sligo, on July 12, peacefully in the loving care of the doctors, nurses and staff at the Northwest Hospice, Sligo surrounded by her loving family.
Dawn was predeceased by her parents Cecil and Ivy Higgins (Carraroe, Sligo), sisters Jewel Lindsay and Violet Frazer. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Ivan and she was loving mother of Caroline (George), John (Trish), Mervyn (Margaret), Robert (Maeve), Rachel (John), and Neville (Deirdre). She will also be missed by her brothers Sam and Albert, sister Ina, sisters-in-law Lorna and Ettie, brothers-in-law Noel, Ivan and Richard, her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
Dawn reposed at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Tuesday evening, July 14, from 5.30 to 7pm. Her funeral arrived to Killanley Church of Ireland on Wednesday for 2pm Service followed by burial in the church grounds.
The death took place of James (Damie) Langan, Castletown, Corballa, Co Sligo on July 9, peacefully in his 100th year in the wonderful care of the St Augustine’s Nursing home, Ballina. Damie was predeceased by his parents Michael and Mary, his sister Teresa Igoe and his brothers Martin and Paddy.
Damie will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his nephews and niece, his grandnephews and grandnieces, his great grand nephews and great grand nieces, by his sister-in-law Ann, cousins, neighbours, wide circle of friends, wonderful carers and his loyal friend Jon.
Damie reposed in McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Sunday, July 12, from 6.30pm with removal to St Joseph’s Church, Castleconnor at 8.30pm. Requiem Mass was held on Monday, July 13 at 11am followed by burial in Killanely Cemetery.
