Local Notes: Connacht Cross Country 2025 championships held in Enniscrone.
And they're off...Participants in the Connacht Cross Country 2025 championships which was hosted by Sligo County and West Sligo Athletic Club in Enniscrone on Sunday, October 26 last.
The Connacht Cross Country 2025 hosted by Sligo County and West Sligo AC in Enniscrone on Sunday, October 26, saw over 700 runners from clubs all across Connacht give it their all in wet and windy conditions. The atmosphere was electric, thanks to the incredible athletes, coaches, spectators, volunteers, parents, and the local community who made it such a memorable day. There was some seriously impressive running-out on the Castlefield course and congratulations and well done is extended to everyone who took part.
Hard luck to Eoghan Rua senior ladies who bowed out of their Connacht campaign after a tough battle against Leitrim champions, Glebncar/Manorhamiliton on Bank Holiday Monday, October 27. It just wasn’t their day.
Even though Monday ended in disappointment for the girls, it certainly does not define the year this fantastic group have had and the joy they brought to Enniscrone, Easkey, Castleconnor and beyond after winning the double! It started off with a strong league campaign and ended up with a Division 1 league title for the first time ever in the history of the club after a trojan battle versus Drumcliffe/Rosses Point.
It did not stop there and perhaps some will say they were only getting started. Despite the pressure from the outside, the pressure of winning a 2nd championship title and the pressure of backing up last year’s title, they did it with pride and they sure did it in style. October 11, history was made once again when the ladies took home their 2nd ever senior championship title captained by Louise Lindsay.
The Eoghan Rua Ladies end a fantastic season with two pieces of silverware, silverware any club would die to get their hands on. The club extend their sincere thanks to all the supporters, particularly the underage girls, who travelled in numbers the length and breadth of the county and beyond this year. ‘Thank you for always believing in our ladies and backing them to the final whistle’, said a spokesperson for the club. ‘This would not be possible without their management team – Shane Feeney, Patrick Cleary, Marty Duffy, Vincent Cuffe, Liam Naughton and Michael Moyles for all their hard work all year. Thank you to secretary Lisa Cuffe who does untold work behind the scenes every week and to all the executive; to Declan and all at Enexiv who have show incredible support to our ladies. There was never a moment you weren’t willing to lend a hand; last thank you to all in Enniscrone Kilglass GAA, Castleconnor GAA and Easkey GAA who let us use their facilities all year round. This team is only getting started and we cannot to see what the next few years has in store’.
Having hosted the county senior football on October 12 and the replay on October 25, Enniscrone Kilglass GAA club acknowledges the contribution of the many people who offered a helping hand in recent week. They extend a sincere thank you to all their volunteers and stewards, those who helped with catering and prepared food, those who ran the club shop and all of those who helped prepare the playing surface and its surrounds for both days.
The club also extend their thanks to local landowners for their co-operation with parking, the local Gardai for their help and the wider community for helping the club showcase their grounds, club and community in the best possible light over recent weeks.

In challenging conditions and playing with a strong breeze in the first half, Western Gaels Hurling and Camogie Club showed great determination and skill to push on in the second half, landing some crucial scores to secure the county title. The final score was Western Gaels 2-7, Easkey 1-7.

‘Where Do We All Belong?’ is a powerful and heartfelt visual art/audio/photographic examination of loneliness in rural Sligo currently on display at Abhainn Studio, Enniscrone. This project has been in incredible journey and congratulations is extended to Noel Feeney, Ronan Dillon and Peter Martin for all the creativity, dedication and hard work that went into making it happen.
This socially-engaged visual art project addressing loneliness in Co Sligo, drew on the tradition of mobile rural services, such as travelling shops and libraries. The lads spent a week driving across Sligo in a mobile research unit gathering anonymous surveys and reflections on loneliness. The feedback inspired the visual art project and short film that they hope will inspire meaningful connections and promote social inclusion.
This thought-provoking exhibition on loneliness will continue until November 15, at Abhainn Studio. Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 10am-6pm.

The club extend their grateful thanks to their directors and actors who put in the hard work over the last few weeks, to the stage crew and those that prepared the centre, to Castleconnor Community Council and the centre committee, to the gang for running the raffle, to the crew on door duty and all those who helped out in the kitchen, to the promotion team for their work getting the word out in the papers, with signage and to the businesses who displayed posters, and to all their sponsors.
No play can go ahead without the dedicated work of a vibrant group of volunteers and thanks is extended to all and finally a big thanks to all the audiences for going on Saturday and Sunday, as without an audience it would be a pretty lonely place on that stage.
