Local Notes: Co-founder of Hospice shop in Swinford is remembered

Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation’s inaugural annual Memorial Mass took place recently in Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, Swinford. Before the Mass, there was an unveiling of a plaque at the local Hospice shop in memory of Ann Meehan. Ann, along with retired Hospice CEO Cynthia Clampett had the vision of opening a charity shop in Swinford and it became the first of 12 Hospice shops in Mayo and Roscommon. Tara’s Run/Walk for Fun 

Tara’s Run/Walk for Fun takes place on Saturday, September 28th. Registration at 11am, run starts at 12 noon sharp from Killasser Community Centre. Entry fee is €10 for adults and €5 for children. All proceeds will go to Killasser Community Centre and Anam Cara.

Learn to play Bridge

Learn a new skill, make life-long friends, exercise the brain, and no more Winter night boredom. Bridge is a fascinating game that is well worth learning.

The Swinford Athletic Club Autumn Series continues until September 11th as follows:

Round 4: August 28th, Midfield F12VE20, registration at 6.30pm, start at 7.15pm.

Round 5: September 7th, Swinford F12H593, registration at 9am, start 10am.

Round 6: September 11th, Kiltimagh F12PN79, registration at 6.30pm, start at 7.15pm.

Light Up the Sky 

As part of this year's Light up the Sky remembrance event, which will take place at the Butterfly Garden on August 31st at 7.30pm, the Butterfly Garden committee is compiling a register of baby names to be read out at the event and to make up some keepsakes to decorate The Butterfly Garden for the evening.

If you would like your baby's name added to the register, please feel free to message the Butterfly Garden Facebook page privately. If you added your baby's name to the register for last year’s event, the organisers have kept that list to read out for this year's event along with any new names received.

Jungle Challenge 

Save the date: Swinford Football Club is proud to present Jungle Challenge Fundraiser on November 23rd in Julian’s of Midfield at 8pm.

Lotto 

There was no winner of the jackpot in the Swinford Community Lotto draw held on August 19th when the numbers drawn were 2, 7, 8 and 20. 

The winners of €70 vouchers were Johanna McNicholas, Barnacogue and K & A McNulty, Achill; €35 each was won by Nathan Griffin, c/o Moore's, Teresa Henry, Charlestown, Áine Conlon, Druids Court and Martin Doherty, Curryane.

The jackpot is now €16,200.

Indoor Market 

Swinford Indoor Market will take place on Saturday, September 7th, in Swinford Cultural Centre from 10:30am to 3pm. 

Vendors will be showcasing an array of products, including locally-sourced produce, crafts, and other unique items. Cácaí Acla will be serving teas, coffees, and their fabulous bakes on the day, adding to the overall experience.

Golf Club

The Vice-Captain’s Day at Swinford Golf Club was held on Sunday, August 18th, hosted by Enda Murtagh.

The event was graced with fair yet tricky weather, featuring wind and intermittent showers, which added to the challenge.

A big thank you to all the participants, and a special shout-out to Vice Captain Enda Murtagh for organising such a memorable competition.

Senior Ladies Charity Event 

The 9-Hole Stableford event, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Swinford Golf Club’s Senior Ladies' section, was a resounding success. 

Thanks to the participants and generous contributions, over €1,500 was raised for Kelly's Walk 2 Rome, supporting the Mayo Parkinson’s Association and Children’s Health Foundation Crumlin. A special shoutout to the senior ladies for their exceptional organisation and effort in making this event possible.

Thank you to every golfer, supporter, and volunteer who came out to play and contribute to these worthy causes.

Mass 

Mass in Killasser Church on Thursday, October 24th, will be celebrated by Bishop Paul Dempsey at 7pm. Refreshments afterwards and a presentation will be made to Bishop Dempsey, who has left his role in Achonry to take up a new position in Dublin Archdiocese.  All welcome.

Sympathy 

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Thomas Conlon, Lisbrogan, Swinford and Clonskeagh, Dublin, who passed away recently.

Active Age Open Day

Parent and Toddler Group 

Kilmovee Parent and Toddler Group meet every Tuesday from 10am to 12 noon in Kilmovee Community Centre. 

All parents, grandparents, carers, and toddlers are welcome to attend for a chat, play, and a cup of coffee. It’s a great way to meet new people and socialise with parents and children.

Bingo

Bingo continues to be held in Kilmovee Community Centre with a jackpot of €1,550 on 50 calls and the house lotto is €240 on four correct numbers. There is a 50/50 draw with a guaranteed weekly winner. 

Bingo is held on Sunday evenings at 8.30pm. See you there.

Cemeteries

The committee of Naomh Mobhi and St Patrick's Cemeteries wishes to thank everyone who contributed towards the upkeep of the cemeteries. Thanks also to Tony Killoran and John Joe Cassidy who made their properties available for parking. Unfortunately, the weather was not as cooperative. Also a big thank you to Fr Joseph for his help and guidance.

Shamrocks GAA Lotto

Popular Ballaghaderreen butcher dies

The death took place of James Cunniffe, Ishlawn and Convent Road, Ballaghaderreen, peacefully with his family by his side, at the Mayo Hospice, Castlebar on August 13.

James was predeceased by his father Gerald and his infant son Gerald. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Saoirse, sons Seamus and Sean, his mother Una, brothers John, Gerry and Noel, sisters Ann, Caroline, Evelyn and Geraldine, aunt Claire, his children’s mother Teresa, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, cousins, neighbours, staff and many friends. 

James reposed in the Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen on Friday, August 16, with removal from the family home (Convent Road) on Saturday, August 17, to St Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 12 noon, followed by interment in Kilcolman Cemetery. 

May James rest in peace as we offer our sympathy to all who are bereaved by his passing.
