Local Notes: Claremorris to host Town Hall election event

Claremorris Community Radio will host a Local Election Special in the Claremorris Town Hall Theatre. The public are invited to come along to meet the candidates face-to-face, to hear their individual pitches and to question them from the floor. The event takes place on May 29 at 8.30pm.

Mount St Michael News

Some First Year students played in the Anne Grogan Memorial Blitz, hosted by Ballyhaunis Community School. They qualified for the shield final where they played against Balla Secondary School, and after a hard battle, the girls were triumphant.

The Second Year pupils had a lovely day out for their school tour to Castlebar lately. They enjoyed a game of bowling, laser games and a movie.

The Transition Year students enjoyed climbing Croagh Patrick following their recent trip to Italy.

The Leaving Certs had an ‘Anything but a Bag Day’, which involved bringing their school books and equipment in prams, trolleys and more! The Leaving Certs also enjoyed their final coffee morning which was organised by their Year Head, Ms Power.

A ‘sampling day’ for incoming First Year students will take place this Friday, May 24, from 9am to 1.15pm.

Claremorris GAA Club 

The Claremorris senior footballers had an emphatic 8-12 to 1-06 victory over Burrishoole GAA in the Division 3B League.

GAA 50/50 Lotto 

Congratulations to Eddie Kelly, who won the Claremorris GAA 50/50 lotto on May 12, taking home the €817 prize money. The winning ticket was sold in Gilligan's.

Hegarty's Centra Claremorris has welcomed Chris to their team - joining temporarily as the shop’s interim manager.

St Colman’s College news

Congratulations to Sarah Ryan who was the latest spot-prize winner in the St Colman's College College Lotto. Her son John, a first-year student in the school, accepted her prize from principal Roy Hession.

The Transition Year students doing the John Paul II Awards this year climbed Croagh Patrick. The students and teachers enjoyed the lovely weather during their day out.

Claremorris Musical Society 

The Claremorris Musical Society has announced its 18th production will be The Addams Family

The Claremorris Town Hall Theatre will host the musical from January 29 to February 1, 2025. Their production team includes director Donna Ruane, musical director Deirdre Lee and choreographer Jay Molyneux. Keep an eye on the Claremorris Musical Society Facebook page for audition details.

Claremorris LGFA 

Well done to ladies senior players Kelly, Becca, Marina and Síle who recently completed the Inishbofin Half Marathon.

Golf Club 

Congratulations to Bert Sexton and Riana Kean who came in first place in their respective categories in the recent golf competition sponsored by Greens Stores & JG Sports.

Claremorris Golf Club is hosting a ‘massive’ AM-AM Scramble between May 28 and June 3. There will be over €7,500 in prizes. Four-player teams cost €120. Sign up in the clubhouse or call the golf club on 094-9371527.

A men’s beginner’s golf programme is starting on Monday, June 3. Contact the golf club or call into the clubhouse for more details.

Claremorris Drama Group 

The Claremorris Drama Group brought their comedy play, Family Fever, to Garrymore Hall last Friday to help fundraise for Gortskehy National School. There was a raffle and refreshments served on the night.

The drama group also raised €1,570 for Brickens Meals on Wheels thanks to hosting Family Fever in Ballyhaunis on Friday, May 10.

Tennis Camps 

A tennis camp will take place this July at Claremorris Tennis Club. The camp will run over four weeks and will cost €65 (members) / €75 (non members) per week.

Musical Theatre Summer School 

A Musical Theatre Summer School takes place in Claremorris’ Town Hall Theatre from Monday, July 1 to Friday, July 12 (weekdays) between 10am and 4pm. The school is for boys and girls aged between 6 and 16 years old. Book now online at www.abuperformingarts.ie.

Claremorris AFC 

The senior women’s team made it two wins in a row when they defeated Westport United 1-0 in Concannon Park. Hannah Cleary scored the important match-winning goal.

The senior men’s side were recently involved in a ten-goal thriller against Kiltimagh/Knock United when they drew 5-5 in the Super League. Brandon Walsh, Cathal Walsh, Simon Butler and Mark Maloney (2) scored the goals on the day.

Claremorris Colts RFC 

The Claremorris Colts Rugby Football Club’s Annual Awards will take place in the McWilliam Park Hotel this Friday, May 24. This will be the club’s 15th anniversary celebration night. Tickets are available on Eventbee.

Claremorris Darts 

Congratulations to Sara Joyce who was crowned champion of the Claremorris Ladies Darts League. Sara defeated Patricia Joyce 5-1 in the final.

Swimming Club 

There was another great display from members of the Claremorris Swimming Club in Castlebar lately. There were mountains of personal bests and a number of individual medals earned - including a 123 in one event. Congratulations to the relay team on their gold medal victory and to Luke for smashing the minute barrier in the 100m backstroke.

Claremorris Library 

Claremorris Library recently hosted Ukrainian writer and journalist Maxim Bespalov. Bespalov spoke to the large audience about his book: ‘Everything You Know About Ireland is True, But...’ 

 His new book delves into the history and everyday life of Ireland, shedding light on both its tragic past and extraordinary present.

The event was organised by Maria Korsakova, leader of the Ukrainian community in Claremorris.

Congratulations 

Huge congratulations to Gary McDonnell (Claremorris Ultimate Kickboxing Club) who became Ireland’s first-ever WAKO PRO World Champion in ring sport after defeating Norway’s top fighter Henry Macpherson.

Following his 12-round triumph, Gary said: “Words can’t even describe how last night went, the atmosphere was electric. I want to thank everyone who took the time out of their day to send me good luck messages and to all the people who took the trip to Dublin to cheer me on.” 

Claremorris Boys NS 

Students from second to sixth class recently enjoyed an Indoor Yard Club. There were some new activities for the children to enjoy.
