Local Notes: Claremorris clubs join forces with Dillon Quirke Foundation

Tribute to James

Claremorris GAA Club paid tribute to Aghamore GAA player James McNeive who died in a recent car crash in Sligo. 

A club post said: “Claremorris GAA Club would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of James McNeive and all at Aghamore GAA Club following the sad passing of James. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.” 

Connacht call-up 

Well done to the Claremorris Colts players who lined out for the Connacht Regional U16 squad - Katie Corcoran, Millie Ager, Emma Heffernan, Hannah Skeffington and Ruth Cuanne.

Captain’s Prize 

Congratulations to Andrew Finn who recently celebrated his Captain's Prize at Claremorris Golf Club. 

Despite the weather, the crowd turned out in full force and had a fantastic time. Special shoutout to Ger Noone for winning the competition. Congratulations also to Alex Pilbrow on winning the junior section.

Auditions registration 

Registration for The Addams Family auditions on September 15 is now open. Check out Claremorris Musical Society’s socials to find the link to register.

Technology Centre 

Mayo County Council has granted planning permission for the construction of a new Technology Centre in Claremorris. 

The technology centre will include offices, meeting rooms, a digital hub and a café, as well as all ancillary site works and services. The proposed development is to be located on a 2.5-hectare greenfield site at Clare, Claremorris, to the rear of the train station and within a short distance of the town centre.

Recent death 

The death has taken place of Margaret Cleary (née McManus), Cussolough, Brickens, Claremorris. 

Predeceased by her cherished son Shane and her parents Michael and Maureen McManus, she is deeply regretted by her loving husband Sean, her sisters Mary (Feamore), Rosaleen (Dublin), Karen (Tuam), brothers James (Tuam) and Michael (Feamore), nieces Alissa, Caroline and Lydia and their mother Dorene, ber brother-in-law Michael and his family, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. 

May Margaret’s gentle soul rest in peace.

Claremorris Parkrun 

Well done to everyone who turned out for event #299 of Claremorris parkrun. The parkrun were thrilled to welcome tourists from Leeds, London and a family from Cabinteely in Dublin.

Claremorris GAA 50/50 Lotto 

Congratulations to Donal Heaney on winning the recent Claremorris GAA 50/50 Lotto. Donal picked up his prize of €2,141.

Claremorris AFC 50/50 

Congratulations to Sinead Pidgeon on winning the recent Claremorris AFC 50/50 Lotto. Sinead picked up her prize of €598.

Recent death 

Tributes have been paid to Cathy O’Brien, Ashford Court, Claremorris, a former director of Claremorris Leisure Centre, following her passing. The leisure centre said: “Both Cathy and her late husband Martin were highly involved in both our old and new swimming pool as well as their commitment and time to Claremorris swimming club down through the years. May her gentle soul rest in peace.” 

Cathy is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughters Sarah, Kate and Lisa, sisters Bernie Kelly (Bekan), Helena Morrin (The Neale), Anne Glavey (Aghamore) and Yvonne Duffy (Knock), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

New appointment 

Fr Seán Flynn is wished all the best in his new appointment as parish priest of Crossboyne/Taugheen and Kilvine. Fr Seán recently celebrated his first mass in the Parish of Kilvine at the annual Kilvine Cemetery Mass.

Champion 

Well done to all the attendees and contestants who competed in Garrymore GAA’s recent Quid Game event in Claremorris’ McWilliam Park Hotel. Congratulations to Liam Horkan who claimed the €10,000 winning prize.

Important initiative 

Last week, heart screening took place for over 180 of Claremorris’ community’s youth, marking the largest initiative of its kind in the country to date - thanks to the Dillion Quirke Foundation. 

Well done to all in Claremorris GAA Club, Claremorris South Responder Group and Claremorris Youth Cardiac Screening Programme including Tony McGing, John Comer, Padraic McHugh, Orla Sweeney, Donna Cassidy, Jim Nally, Aisling McGahon and Paul Hunt.

Dwellings 

According to data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), a total of 245 new dwellings have been completed in Mayo in the first half of 2024. Of these, 148 were single houses, 78 were scheme houses and 19 were apartments. 

A decrease was recorded in the Claremorris Local Electoral Area, rom 52 new dwellings in the first half of 2023 to 38 this year.

Volunteers needed 

Claremorris Colts RFC are looking for volunteers to join the club, whether it's as a coach, mentor, coordinator, team support, physio, S&C, committee member, fundraising, child welfare, social or just a general helper. Contact one of their social media channels if interested.

What's on 

Claremorris Town Hall Theatre is hosting Granny & The Salmon of Knowledge, performed by Little Gem Puppets this month. The show takes place on Saturday, August 31. Doors from 1pm and the show is at 1.30pm. Tickets are available to purchase directly from the Box Office at 094-9310999 or you can call into the theatre.

Well done 

A big well done to everyone who joined Claremorris Leisure Centre for their Safety and Rescue classes during their Irish Water Safety (IWS) week. A special thanks to the IWS instructors, Adam, Paul, Anna, Éabha, Cara and Darragh.

Congratulations 

Claremorris Golf Club member Jack O'Connell, who is pro tour caddie to Conor Purcell, is DP World Tour bound following their win in Northern Ireland. Jack is the youngest caddie on tour. Congratulations Jack!
