There is a compelling story attached to every date – from the first time the iconic green and red of Mayo was worn to the story of Ballintubber Abbey and the Moore’s of Moorehall.

Other well-known events such as the Landing of the French in Killala, the Apparition at Knock and the discovery of the Céide Fields are also examined.

Honouring CLG Thuar Mhic Éadaigh heroes

On Sunday week last, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh’s 1998 County Junior champions were honoured as the 25th anniversary jubilee-winning team at half-time in the 2023 Junior County Final in MacHale Park.

1998 was a breakthrough year for the Tuar Mhic Éadaigh junior team, managed by Pat Naughton and Tommy Heneghan. Having lost the West Mayo Finals of 1995 and 1997, success came in 1998 with the West Mayo title in September.

Later that year, in November, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh were crowned Junior ‘A’ County champions, bringing home the Pete McDonnell Cup for the first time since 1979, having beaten Crossmolina in a close contest by 1-9 to 0-11. It was a very young Tuar Mhic Éadaigh team, the oldest player on the field that day was only 24.

Following on from that fantastic County Championship win, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh went on to win the inaugural Connacht Junior Football Championship in March 1999. It was a great achievement for the club to bring a county and provincial championship title back to its parish, but to bring two back within one year was a truly remarkable feat.

Salute the wonderful panel of players that brought Tuar Mhic Eadaigh such wonderful prestigious success: James O’Neill, Pat Heneghan, Stephen Heneghan, Ger Lydon, David Gibbons, Brendan Prendergast, Adrian Farragher, John Lydon, John Heneghan, Sean Folan, Tom Naughton, Joe Heneghan, Damien Heneghan, Ciaran Walsh, Michael Staunton, Michael James Meeneghan, Brian Naughton, Michael John Walsh, Tom Ronan, Pat Dermody, John O’Shea, Michael O’Neill, Tom McHale, John Farragher, David Lydon, Danny Lydon, Colm O Conghaile and Rory Conroy.
