Swinford Gardening Club will hold their last Gardening Club talk of the year on ' Autumn in the Garden'. This will take place on Tuesday, October 22, at 8pm in the meeting room on Lower Main Street. This talk is free to members. Non-members €5.

Kellys Walk 2 Rome

Cathal reached St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City last Thursday, October 10, after 2200kms and 118 days on this epic adventure across Europe. Thank you to everyone for the support throughout. There has been an unbelievable amount of goodwill and support shown to this fundraiser and as a result the two charities Mayo Parkinson's Association and Children's Health Foundation Crumlin. There will be a presentation night for this fundraiser in Melletts on Friday, October 25, and Cathal looks forward to seeing you there. 

A Life from a Midwife’s Bag

Join local historian Emma Laffey at 2pm on Saturday, October 19, for a talk called ‘A Life from a Midwife’s Bag’, about her extensive research project on rural midwives. This talk takes place at the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Emma’s work has recently been developed into a new exhibition celebrating the enduring legacy of community midwives in shaping maternity care in Ireland in the early 20th century. Wave of Light 2024

This year for Wave of Light 2024, The Butterfly Garden in collaboration with artist Tom Meskell invite you to a Wave of Light Exhibition at the Butterfly Garden at 7pm on October 15. Wave of Light is a global event where worldwide on October 15, at 7pm buildings light up pink and blue and candles are lit creating a 24-hour continuous light around the world in memory of all little ones that couldn't stay. Feileacain Wave of Light have The Butterfly Garden listed along with buildings and landmarks around Ireland who will be lit up pink and blue. This year at The Butterfly Garden there will be an exhibition of sculpted butterfly lanterns placed and lit up throughout the garden at 7pm which we invite you to take a moment to walk around the garden and remember the little ones taken too soon. Thank you is extended to artist Tom Meskell for his support in this project and to all those who attended the workshops during the summer and helped create the sculptures.

Tara’s Run for Fun

Tara’s Run for Fun took place in Killasser on September 28. There was a fantastic turnout on this sunny Saturday morning and lots of fun was had in Tara’s memory. An amazing €4,621 was raised on the day. The funds have been divided equally between Killasser Community Centre and Anam Cara Parental Bereavement Support. The Hussey family thank all those who helped or participated in the event and to local businesses who sponsored prizes for the raffle. Tara’s Run for Fun has raised an outstanding €22,056.60 over five annual events, and benefiting charities over the years include The Mater Family Heart Screening, Mayo Roscommon Hospice, Anam Cara and Killasser Community Centre.

Lotto

The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community lotto draw held on October 7, were 5, 11, 17 and 18. €70 vouchers were won by Michael Molloy, Cloonfinaune and Breege Rowley, Lisheenabrone. €35 was won by Lena Conway, Carrabaun, Declan O'Conner, c/o P Horkan, Philip Irwin, The Sheepwalk Bar and Margaret Devaney, Drumshinnagh. The latest jackpot is now €17,600.

Pole Walking

Active Pole Walking to music takes place every Thursday at 10.30am for one hour in Swinford Cultural Centre with a qualified instructor. It is a fun activity with walking and exercise for over 55s. Tea/coffee and biscuits after. €4 to help cover hall hire, tea and insurance.

Results of the weekly game held on Tuesday, October 8, in Meelick Community Centre. 1st prize was won by Ciaran Rowley and Patricia Rowley, 2nd and 3rd were shared between Tom Durkan, Michael Ward, Francie Rowley and Michael Ryan. Raffle prize winners were; Patricia Rowley, Philip Moore and Tom Durkan. 

Spooky Walk and Fireworks

Are you ready to be spooked? On Sunday, October 27, in Wetlands Park (beside Kiltimagh Park Hotel) a Spooky Tots Stroll will take place from 4.30 to 5.30pm. Before all the witches, ghosts and goblins are out under the cover of darkness, all your tots are invited to stroll through the less spooky walk in daylight. Spooks and Scares will all be saved for later in the evening. Spooky Walk from 7pm with Tricks and Treats for all. Parking at the Cairn Trade Centre or Bohola Road with pedestrian access. Can you scare the witches, zombies and ghosts with your Halloween costume. The evening will be finished off with a fireworks display at 9pm.

Jungle Challenge

Swinford FC Jungle Challenge has been rescheduled to the later date of March 1, 2025. The club appreciate the huge support so far and look forward to the launch night on November 23.

Qigong classes

New Qigong classes for seniors are now available at The Cultural Centre every Wednesday evening from 8 to 9pm. These classes are designed to provide a relaxing and enjoyable experience, allowing participants to move at their own pace. Qigong is a gentle form of exercise that can help improve balance, flexibility, and overall well-being. Classes are offered on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no pressure to commit to a long-term membership.

Killasser Parish calendars

Tractor Run

The annual Killasser Parish Tractor Run will take place on Sunday, October 27. The drive departs at 2pm from Killasser Community Centre, with registration beforehand from 1.30pm. The cost is €15 per tractor, €10 for second tractor. Refreshments served afterwards along with participant spot prizes.

 Thanks has been extended to all who supported the recent coffee morning, in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice and to all who helped organise the morning, helped out on the day and to all who did such wonderful baking. A total of €2,455 was collected.
