Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the very popular Belmullet Tidal pool amenity recently are some of the members of the original committee with present committee members & Councillor Sean Carey at the recent celebration.

Celebrating 40 years

What an amazing day was held recently when Belmullet Tidal Pool celebrated its 40th anniversary. The present committee hope everyone enjoyed the occasion and they loved having you all come to celebrate 40 years of salty sea swims with them. A big thank you to everyone who helped out in any way to make the event successful; to anyone who sent their well wishes we understand ye couldn’t be there in presence but we knew ye were there in spirit, thank you; special mention to the past and present committee members, lifeguards, swimming instructors, water safety officers for coming and sharing their memories and history of the pool.

‘We are so very lucky to have a great team of instructors, trainer instructors, lifeguards and volunteers who give up so much time to teach, promote water safety and the tidal pool in a positive and fun way. Without this team none of the lessons would be possible and we cannot thank them enough for everything they do (I’m sure they are fit to kill us at times)’, said a spokesperson.

‘We are the champions’

Congratulations to Belmullet who recently won the U14 North Mayo (B) final in Ballycastle on a score line of 7-4 to 1-5, beating a highly regarded Bonniconlon team in the process. Belmullet rode their luck somewhat in the first quarter when Bonniconlon hit a raspier off the crossbar and goal line clearances from goalie Jayden Geraghty, corner back Harry Padden and Cathal Walsh saved the mullets blushes. Darragh Tighe and Charlie Moran soon began to exert their authority on proceedings and Belmullet settled into a good rhythm of play. Blake Doocey and Daibhi Lally were winning most of the breaking ball in the second quarter and this laid a decent platform for the red and white. Billy Lavelle and Michael James Walsh were having a tough battle with the Bonni midfield but edged the contest with their superior fitness. Ciarán Lavelle was pulling the strings at centre forward early in the second half with Jack Gaughan scoring a brace and Johnny Carey having a ding dong battle with the a Bonni half back. Conail Rowan was having an almighty tussle with the Bonni full back and popped up with a number of assists. James McDonnell and Scott Henderson kept the two corner backs on their toes all day. Notable contributions from Shane McWilliams, Dara Brady, Jack Moran and PJ Canning.

Erris Utd success

Congratulations to Erris Utd and Management on capturing the Tonra Cup (divisional trophy) on a 3-1 score line against Swinford at Umbro Park Milebush recently. This was back to back success having won the Division Two trophy last year. Erris were much fancied going into the final but Swinford pushed them all the way in a pulsating contest. Iorras went in front after quarter of an hour as Dara Padden slotted home a penalty after he was fouled in the box by Denis Coffey. Swinford had the better of the first half but in truth rarely troubled Kian Gallagher in the Iorras net. Adrian Moran made a double change at half-time and one of the subs Evan Rowley came close to making an instant impact as he waltzed through the defence to force a good save from Gallagher inside the opening two minutes of the second half. Iorras themselves made a change upfront when Ivan Barrett replaced the goal scorer Padden and within three minutes he had doubled the lead for his side with a brilliant goal. Liam Donoghue picked out Barrett with a brilliant through ball and Barrett somehow headed the ball up in the air for himself and then volleyed the ball past Pektas in the Swinford net. Swinford did get a goal back when Rowley powered the ball home when Iorras failed to clear a corner but Barrett wrapped up the win for Michael McHale’s men when he raced clear on goal and rounded Pektas before walking the ball into the net with ten minutes remaining.

It’s ironic that Erris goalkeeper Kian Gallagher was mascot for Inver Utd back in 2008 when they won this trophy.
