The death has taken place of Patrick, (Paddy) Keaveney, Ballintubber, Claremorris, Co. Mayo, Paddy passed away peacefully at University Hospital Galway, on September 9. He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Grace, and he is deeply regretted by his sons Gregory and Ronan, their mother Josephine Tonra-Keaveney, grandsons Séan and James, daughter-in-law Breeda, cousin Mary Ruane, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
Patrick’s remains reposed at Ballintubber Resource Centre on the Sunday evening from 5pm with removal at 7pm to Ballintubber Abbey. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Monday at 12 noon with the funeral proceeding to Shannon Crematorium for committal service at 4pm. May he rest eternally in the peace and happiness of heaven.
Ballintubber GAA lotto jackpot stood at €8,000 on Sunday night, September 13. 9, 10, 17 and 23 were the numbers drawn and there was no jackpot winner. Consolation prizes went to Mary Hallinan, Shane Naughton, Tom Malone, Oisin McGovern, Pauline O’ Donoghue and Ellen Brophy and Lily Lyons. On Tuesday evening last Ballintubber U17 side scored an impressive win over Ballina Stephanites in the penultimate group game. Westport provide the opposition this Tuesday evening in Clogher in what should be a cracking game between two top sides.

Ballyglass Active Age will attend the “Age Strong, Live Long” event in the Great National Hotel, Ballina on October 1. This is an event which promotes healthy ageing, wellbeing and connection and features practical information, inspiring talks, interactive activities and lots of helpful advice. An expert panel will discuss ways to stay well, maintain independence, manage medications safely and support physical and cognitive health as we age. This event is supported by Healthy Mayo and Mayo County Council, and it will run from 10.30 to 4pm. This autumn an amazing swallow roost is taking place occasionally on Lough Carra. The roost which gathers most years from late July and August to mid-September may consist of up to 30,000 birds. The swallow roost has gathered near Moorehall a few times recently and provides a good opportunity for people to view this event. The location and size of a swallow roost is not very predictable so some luck might be needed to see this gathering.

The Lough Carra Catchment Association (LCCA) invites all members of the community to attend a public meeting on Tuesday, September 29, at 8pm in Belcarra Community Centre (F23 HY58). This meeting will feature a presentation from Caoimhe Hickey, Geological Survey Ireland (GSI), who will provide an update on the recently completed Lough Carra Groundwater Study, undertaken as part of the Lough Carra LIFE Project.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about ongoing work in the Lough Carra catchment, hear the latest findings, and engage with local projects that are helping to protect and enhance our unique environment.

Killawalla Centre is the venue on this Wednesday night, September 23 for a community meeting to explore the concerns of those who wish to oppose the Killawalla/Killadeer/Ballyheane proposed Wind Farm. The meeting will explore the negatives associated with the proposal from a community standpoint and provide an opportunity to share details and formulate policy in opposition to the proposed development. The organisers are inviting local residents to attend the meeting and contribute their skills and knowing in in making an agreed and defined response in opposition to the project.
The death has occurred of Padraig (Paddy) Conroy, Greenaun, Tourmakeady. Paddy passed away peacefully at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar on Sunday, September 13. Predeceased by his parents Ann and Michael, and his brothers Tommy and Micheal, he is deeply regretted by his sister Mary (Cong), relatives, neighbours and friends to whom sincere condolences are extended.
Paddy’s remains reposed at St Mary’s Funeral Home, Tourmakeady on the Wednesday evening from 6pm with removal at 7.30 to St Mary’s Church, Tourmakeady. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday at 12 noon, with burial ceremonies taking place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
In the latest round of the Junior “A” championship Tourmakeady rounded off a splendid group campaign with an 11 point victory against Ballycastle. The quarter finals now beckon next weekend when Tourmakeady deservedly have a home encounter with Killala. Tourmakeady Wood parkrun runs every Saturday meeting in the carpark of the Wood at 9.30am. This is a timed 5k route. Its open to walkers, joggers, runners, families and dogwalkers if the dog is on a short leash. All are welcome to participate in this hugely enjoyable weekly event.

The death has taken place of Martin Sammon, The Cedars, Breaffy Road, Castlebar, Chapel Street, Castlebar and Glenisland, Castlebar. Martin passed away on Sunday, September 13, unexpectedly after a short illness in University Hospital Galway, surrounded by his loving family. Martin was hugely popular over a wide area for his supportive nature to his medical colleagues in Mayo Mental Health Association, his dedication as a nurse and his care and compassion for all he encountered on the path of life. His many interests included assisting the Special Olympics, kayaking, bowling, tennis and farming. He was positively admired for his many qualities, humanity, humility, gentlemanly traits and the ability to put others first and influence many in his care most positively.
Predeceased by his parents Pat and Annie, uncle John and nephew Niall, he is deeply regretted by his heartbroken family, wife Beatrice, sons Seán, Paul and David, daughter Louise, brothers Pat (Castlebar), Gerry (Ahascragh, Co. The death has occurred of James Kelly, Derryhick, Parke and Moyhenna, Breaffy, Castlebar. James passed away on Monday, September 14, following an accident. In his 44th year his tragic passing is a huge loss to his loving family and all privileged to have known him. James was highly regarded and fondly loved by many friends for his tremendous sense of humour, his wonderful smile, his huge interest in sport and his larger-than-life personality. James was a prominent personality in Parke Keelogues Crimlin GAA Club both as a player and manager. The club cancelled activities as a mark of respect and formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral. They paid him a deserved and worthy tribute on social media “The word legend is used all too frequently these days, but James Kelly was a true Parke Keelogues Crimlin G.A.A legend and will leave behind a huge void in our club one that we will never be able to fill. Balla author, Máirtín G. Ó Maicín, will launch his latest book at this year’s Wild Atlantic Words Festival in Castlebar. His latest publication, Clocha ar mo Phaidrín, published in conjunction with Coiste Dúiche Mhaigh Eo of Conradh na Gaeilge, will feature several of the articles which he has written over the years in various publications. Máirtín is a regular columnist. This is Máirtín’s fourth publication dating back to the beginning of the new millenium. His first work, Beo Go Deo An Leabhar, was published in conjunction with the hosting of Oireachtas na Gaeilge in Castlebar in the year 2000, the first time the language festival was hosted in Mayo. Lán Dóchais is Grá was published in 2014, the year that Castlebar first hosted Fleadh Chonnacht. His widely researched and well written, On This Day in Mayo, was published to wide acclaim in 2023. His latest publication, as Gaeilge arís, deals with a wide variety of topics from history to folklore, current affairs locally, nationally and internationally, nature and the arts and much more besides. Clocha ar mo Phaidrín will be launched by ex MEP and TD, Jim Higgins, at this year’s Wild Atlantic Words Festival on Tuesday, October 6, at 7pm, and all are welcome to attend.

Balla Secondary School were delighted to welcome Helen Ralph to the school last week. Helen delivered a fantastic presentation on the important role of SVP (St Vincent de Paul) within the local community and further afield. The TY students are really looking forward to working with Helen as part of Young SVP, getting involved in meaningful projects and making a positive contribution to the community.
The school also welcomed Gillian Conway from the Western Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force, along with Garda Olive Lafferty and Garda Michael (Mick) Toland. The TY students took part in an important and engaging talk on “Stay Safe, Stay Sober”, focusing on making positive choices, staying safe, and being aware of the risks associated with alcohol and drugs.
A sincere thank you has been extended to Gillian, Garda Lafferty and Garda Toland for taking the time to speak with the students and share such valuable advice and information.
