A newly elected community council has been formed in Ballintubber. Ballintubber Community Council is re-elected every 3 years and this is carried out by Station Area with 2 representatives selected per area. The new community council are as follows: Padraig O’Connor (chairperson), Padraig Jordan (vice chairman), Tricia Burke (secretary), John Durcan (vice secretary), Marie Jennings (treasurer), John McEvilly (vice treasurer), Kelly Nestor (PRO), committee -Martin Costello, Aimee Heneghan, Ronan Keaveney, Kieran Lally, Lorraine Lavelle, Ger Murnane, Martin Moran, Shirley O Toole and Sandra Staunton. They are wished great success with all their ventures in the years ahead.
A seminar on George Moore the novelist will take place on next Friday, February 23, from 10am to 4pm at the Hugh Lane Gallery.
This seminar ‘George Moore in Dublin’ will explore themes arising from the life, art, time and milieu of the pioneering Irish writer George Moore (1852-1933) and will include the following illustrated talks: ‘George Moore and Hugh Lane’s Gallery of Modern Art¬’, Logan Sisley, acting Head of Collections, HLG.
Ireland’s Debt to George Moore – a personal appraisal’- Peter Costello, author, critic and editor: ‘A place to escape from’: almost home – George Moore’s Dublin’, Dr Noreen Doody, former senior lecturer at the School of English, Dublin City University and lecturer on Irish writing of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. ‘George Moore and the British Impressionist Painter Clara Christian McCarthy’- Adrian Frazier, emeritus professor of University of Galway and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy.
The programme includes a recital by Una Hunt, internationally renowned pianist of work by Michele Esposito (1855-1929), Augusta Holmès (1847-1903), Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) - Introduced by Dr Mary Pierse, Trustee, The George Moore Association and co-editor with Kathryn Laing of George Moore: Spheres of Influence (Liverpool University Press). George Moore in Dublin will be chaired by Dr Brendan Fleming, a graduate of the University of Oxford where his doctoral thesis focused on the writings of George Moore. There was no winner of the jackpot in the latest Ballintubber GAA Lotto draw on Sunday, February 11. 15, 17, 34 and 36 were the numbers drawn and the winners of the consolation prizes of €20 special €52k draw tickets on the night were Nicholas O’Kelly, Ann Duffy, Erin Barrett, Rose Bourke, Michael Feehan and Mary Mulroe.
On last Sunday, February 18, the jackpot stood at €3,700. All lucky dip winners get a ticket for the 'Win 52k' draw.
Ballintubber GAA Club is offering a lucky winner the chance to earn €1,000 a week for a year in their recent ‘Win €52K’ fundraiser. The attractive fundraiser will see one lucky winner claim a cash prize of €52,000 paid out at €1,000 per week into their account. Tickets are reasonably priced at €20 each or three for €50 and can be purchased through the club fundraiser website www.win€52k.ie or from any of the club’s executive. The winner will be drawn in the club’s Clogher clubhouse on Sunday, June 2, and will be broadcast live on the club Facebook page.

The Darkness into Light walk will take place in Ballyglass on May 11, in aid of Pieta House. As this year’s event is an official event, where large crowds are expected, volunteers will be needed to ensure the event is run safely and smoothly. The first in a series of planning meetings will take place on this Tuesday, February 29, at 7pm in the community centre. Anyone who would like to lend a hand is very welcome to attend.
The Passion Play at Ballintubber Abbey returns again this year for three performances on Holy Week, Monday, March 25, Tuesday 26,and Wednesday 27. Admission is free, donations are appreciated. All donations for the passion play cover essential running costs, enabling the illustration of Christ’s passion to continue each year. This is the 34th year of the passion play at the famous Abbey site.
All are invited for a lively and scenic Half Tóchar Group Walk from Ballintubber Abbey to Aughagower on April 1. Registration takes place in the visitor centre/shop located at the back of Ballintubber Abbey at 8.15am on the morning of the walk. The Tóchar Phádraig represents a venerable Irish pilgrimage route that dates back approximately 1500 years. This sacred journey commences at Ballintubber Abbey. This trail, which follows the path of an ancient chariot road, traverses over 100 stiles within the picturesque landscape of west Mayo. Along its meandering course, it unfolds before pilgrims, revealing fairy hills, ancient relics, and enigmatic locales where the enduring legends of St. Patrick continue to thrive.
The Tóchar Phádraig is one of the 5 pass ported trails of the Pilgrim Paths of Ireland. These are a collection of ancient religious routes with well-documented claims of having been used by pilgrims since ancient times. Walking these ageless trails not only offers the opportunity for spiritual renewal, but also provides a link to our past while contributing to sustainable tourism and community development in each area. Registration is €20 per person and is payable when booking (Booking fees may apply). A registration document will need to be completed on the morning of the Walk in the Chapter House/Gift Shop. Walkers will need to bring a packed lunch with you on the day, water refills will be provided. There will also be a support driver on the route and they can carry any bags you required. Hi-viz jackets must be worn by all walkers at all times. There is a small number available for hire on the day. A cash deposit of €10 is required to hire a hi-viz jacket and it will be refunded once returned. Buses will return from Aughagower to the Abbey once all the walkers have boarded.
The results of the card games held on Monday, February 12, in Ballyglass Community Centre: 1st Chris Turner and Pat Griffith; Judy Clarke and Kitty Rumley, 2nd Mary Morrin and Jimmy Sheridan and the last 10 winners were Seamus Nevin and Martin Ford. The raffle prizes went to Chris Turner and Pat Griffith. The games continue every Monday evening from 9pm.
The numbers drawn on February 12, were 2, 5, 31 and 32. There was no winner of the €5,800 jackpot. The only match three winner was Grace Gibbons. Consolation prizes went to Jimmy Hession, Celina McCormack, Tommy Connolly and Grace Gibbons.
The AGM of the Ballyglass Active Age group took place on Tuesday, February 6, in the community centre. Discussions took place regarding the annual overnight trip for later in the year, as well as day trips, get-togethers, classes and talks throughout the coming months. New ideas and suggestions were invited from the attendees. Yoga classes and exercise classes will continue this year for the group. Thanks were expressed to Mary, Maureen, Aggie and all the committee for their excellent work all year in organising events and ensuring that everything runs smoothly. New members are always very welcome to come along and become part of this very active and friendly group. Monthly meetings take place on the first Tuesday of every month, after the exercise class at 12 noon. A cuppa and a chat is a big part of the proceedings and all are very welcome.

The death took place last week of Kate Barnard (née Madden), The Old Barracks, Cappaghduff, Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo and formerly of Bolton, Manchester and Loch Gowna, Co. Cavan. Kate passed away on Saturda, February 10, peacefully in the care of her devoted family. Pre-deceased by her husband Albert, her brothers John, Willie and James, sisters Bridgie, Margaret and Rose, she is deeply regretted by her loving family Christine, Kevin, Margaret, Seamus and Paul, daughters-in-law Carmel and Patricia, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces and a large circle of good neighbours and close friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Killawalla Ladies Group continues their meetings with ‘Move It or Lose It’ class which takes place on Wednesday night’s at 7.30pm in the community centre. The classes cost €8 pay as you go. Facilitators Rita Corcoran and Julie Staunton will continue to give First Aid, CPR, and defibrillator classes at the community centre on the evenings of February 20, and 27 (Tuesdays). This is a renewal class for those who were previously trained or anyone interested in learning this very important life-saving skill can give their name and the date that suits them to Louise on 086 6034601 as soon as possible.

Partry Community Centre is close to being ready to open as a WiFi hub which will enable the centre to be used for many projects including working from home. With assistance from the Department of Rural and Community Development and Mayo County Council, the first stage of the project is close to completion. The next step will be the development of a community garden close to the soccer pitch.

Ballyheane and surrounding communities First Responders Group are looking for volunteers to join their group. With defibrillators available in most if not all communities, it is important that as many people as possible are trained to save lives when an emergency arises. An open evening will take place on Thursday, February 29, from 8.30 – 10pm in Ballyheane Community Centre (F23 WP92) to give people an opportunity to meet the local volunteers, learn to use a defibrillator and see how CPR can save a person’s life. Volunteers from all areas are welcome in particular volunteers from Errew and Killawalla are needed most. All training and equipment is provided.
Jiving Lessons Jiving lessons will commence in Ballyheane Community Centre on April 4, in the lead up to the very popular Ballyheane Goes Country Music festival which takes place in early June. Before the Claremorris Group set off on the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland Festival Circuit, the Ray Leonard Players are delighted to present “Eclipsed” by Patricia Burke Brogan on this Tuesday, February 20, in Balla Community Centre. Eclipsed is a thought-provoking play about the era of the Magdalene laundries in Ireland.
This year's Senior Scór County Final will be held in Balla Community Centre on Friday, March 22. The night gets underway with the quiz at 7pm. This will be followed at 8.15pm approx. by stage events incorporating music, song, drama and dancing. Clubs are encouraged to do their best to enter at least one act into the competition. The death took place last week of Kathleen Ansbro née Horan, Carrowbeg Estate, Westport Co. Mayo. Kathleen passed away on the February 11. Sincere sympathy is extended to her daughter Bernie, her sister Nan Higgins, Carnacon and to the extended Horan and Ansbro families to whom sincere condolences are extended.

There are two defibrillators situated in the Clogher area, one at the side of the community hall F12 EK24 and one at the Ballintubber Football pitch F12 HF76. The community would like to identify First Aid and Defibrillator trained people in the area who would be prepared to make themselves available to use a defibrillator or administer first aid in an emergency situation.
