It has been announced that Coiste Ceol na Locha and Coiste SEC Thuar Mhic Éadaigh have been shortlisted for the Gradaim na Gaeltachta 2025 Awards. Judging was finalised recently. The winners will be announced on November 27, at the awards ceremony in the Connemara Coast Hotel in Furbo, Galway. Everyone is hopeful to have a prize-winner coming back to Tuar Mhic Éadaigh!

A biodiversity plan for Tourmakeady is being devised at present. The idea behind the plan is that it will document plants, animals and wildlife habitats in the community. It will also look at areas where improvements can be made and where actions can be taken by the community to make Tourmakeady a more nature friendly community. As part of the process, it is important to get an idea of what is important when you think about the natural environment. Biodiversity refers to all living things.

A Mass of Thanksgiving for Kitty Farragher was celebrated in Partry Community Centre on last Wednesday, November 19, at 7.30pm. The Mass was in recognition of Kitty’s 30 years approx. of dedicated service to Partry Church and the wider community. The annual general meeting of the Mayo Branch of the Irish Farmers Association will take place in Tourmakeady Hall on next Friday, November 28 at 8.30pm. Prominent speakers will attend, and existing and new members will be most welcome.
The beautiful south-west Mayo lakeside community of Tourmakeady has celebrated establishment of its Parkrun on Saturday mornings at 9.30. Parkrun is a free, community event where people can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate.
December 4, is the date set to light up Killawalla village for Christmas and also to remember the deceased members of the community after 7pm Mass. The Killawalla Tree Lighting and Remembrance Service is a cherished annual event. Hot chocolate treats and Christmas Carols will feature and a very special guest will also be in attendance.
This Christmas Killawalla Community Council is also doing something special and a little different… all are invited for afternoon tea on Sunday, December 7, at 3pm. The death occurred last week of Kevin Heuze, Magherafadda, Ballyheane, Castlebar and formerly of Southampton, U.K. Kevin passed away on November 19. His passing is an occasion of great sorrow for his family and many friends. Kevin’s remains reposed at Ballyheane Community Centre on last Friday, November 21, from 7pm with private removal to his home at 8.30pm. Kevin’s Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, November 22, in St. Patrick’s Church, Ballyheane at 12 noon. Afterwards funeral ceremonies for Kevin took place in Ballyheane Cemetery. May he rest eternally in the peace and happiness of heaven.

On tomorrow, Wednesday, November 26, Tom Carolan of Age Friendly Ireland will visit Clogher Active Age Group from 12 noon to talk about the services provided by that group. The motto of Age Friendly Ireland is to ‘support older people to live in their own home with dignity and independence for as long as possible’. The information provided will be of interest to other people who live on their own or carers of older people. Everybody is invited to come along on the day.

Dr Michael M O'Connor’s new book launch ‘Castlebar Prison and the Bridewells of County Mayo 1835-1935 takes place upstairs at Bridge St., Castlebar, on this Tuesday, November 25, at 8pm. The publication of the book marks the end of a decade of diligent research by Dr Michael O’Connor on the seven prisons and many bridewells of County Mayo. The comprehensive publication outlines the names and details of thousands of men, women, and children who passed through the prison’s doors. The book will be officially launched by Judge John O’Connor.
