The Ballinrobe U15 team which has qualified for the Connacht U15 Cup semi-final.

Big win

Ballinrobe RFC had a comprehensive win over Gort in the Connacht U15 Cup last week. The team is now into the Connacht semi-final. Ethan Biggins, Muiris Vahey, Eoin Jennings, Finn Conway, Eoin Conroy, Sam Place, Donagh Gilligan, Max Humphreys and Cian O’Toole all got on the scoresheet for Ballinrobe.

Meanwhile, the U16 team had a stunning last-minute victory over Galwegians at The Green on a scoreline of 24-22. Cillian O’Connor converted a Fionn Jennings try to clinch the win.

Table quiz

A table quiz in aid of St Joseph’s Primary School’s forthcoming trip to the VEX IQ World Robotics competition in Dallas, Texas, will be held in An Fóidín Meara, Hollymount, on Friday, April 12, at 8pm. All support would be appreciated. The team recently clinched victory in a number of categories at the All-Ireland finals in Cork, securing their place in the global final. Teachers Ms Edel Roche and Mr Sean Flannelly have led the initiative, and the school is seeking backing to represent Mayo and Ireland.

Ballinrobe Town AFC

Ballinrobe Town will welcome Ballyheane to The Green next weekend (April 6/7) for what should be an intriguing Mayo Super League clash. The home team will enter this contest in a confident frame of mind, as they earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw in their opening fixture of the new season when they hosted Kiltimagh/Knock United at The Green.

That tie against Kiltimagh/Knock was the first time in 13 years that top-flight football was played at the south Mayo venue. Your support for the team next weekend would be appreciated by the club.

Meanwhile, Ballinrobe Town B will be hoping to maintain their impressive start to League Two when the table toppers travel to Mount Falcon, also next weekend, to face their hosts Conn Rangers C.

Spring Talk Series

A free talk on Corrib Beo’s recent exhibition Corrib Shores: We are the People is to be held in the Crossroads Community Centre, Cong, on Thursday, April 4, at 8pm. Corrib Beo members will tell Cong Moytura Heritage Society and friends all about their work and about the people from around Lough Corrib who were selected for the exhibition. Following the talk, the free exhibition will be on display in the Cong Tourist Office from Friday to Sunday, April 5-7, from 10am to 5pm each day.

The following officers were elected at last week’s annual general meeting of Ballinrobe Active Retirement Association: Chairperson, Ann Patterson; Vice Chairperson, Josie O’Haire; Secretary, Mary Tiernan; Asst Secretary, Lesley Munks; Treasurer / PRO, Josie Mercer; Asst Treasurer, Kathleen Harnesse.

Honours shared

Ballinrobe Town and Swinford played out a 2-2 draw in the Martin Keane U17 Division One league last week. The Ballinrobe goals came from Dylan Mallon and Finn McConville.

Celebration dinner

Ballinrobe ARCH Club will hold a 40th anniversary lunch in the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, on Sunday, April 28. All friends and supporters are invited to attend.

End-of-Season Night

Ballinrobe RFC will hold their 2024 End-of-Season Night, in Flannery’s Bar and Restaurant on Saturday, April 13. There will be individual club awards and player awards for the senior men’s and women’s teams.

“This is always a great night for the club, and we look forward to another brilliant event in Flannery’s Bar & Restaurant in a couple of weeks. Tickets can be bought through our App and cost €25. Get yours tickets early,” said a club spokesperson.

Music will be by Rofi James.

Transition Year coaches

Twenty-two Transition Year students from Ballinrobe Community School supported Ballinrobe GAA and Ballinrobe LGFA with their recent four-week coaching programme in the three local primary schools, St Joseph’s, Cloonliffen and Roxboro. With many of the students having completed a coaching course recently, they proved a tremendous help to the adult coaches who also visited the primary schools.

Grow 

Grow is a mental health support program based on lived experience. This mean Grow groups are a meeting of peers, who are striving to develop and maintain good mental health. If you would like to know more, call your local GROW office on 1800 558 268. You can also register for ‘Welcome to Grow’, the online orientation session. This will give you an introduction to how meetings work and an opportunity to ask questions. You can also search for a group close by to you by using Find a Group and just turning up. No registrations are needed.

Card game

The Neale Hall are having a fundraising 25 card game on Thursday, April 4, at 8.30pm, in support of 'Climb for Fergus' (Loftus). All monies raised will be donated to the Daisy Lodge, Cong.

Western Alzheimers lotto

The numbers drawn in the Western Alzheimers lotto held on March 27,  were 21, 03, 31, 06. There was no winner of this week’s jackpot and it increased to €4,000 for the latest draw which was held on April 3. Mayo Mental Health Association

The information centre in Bohernasup, Ballina, is open to everyone in the community. They provide options, supports and guidance for individuals and their families experiencing mental health difficulties. The information centre provides a confidential sign posting and the drop-in service is open Monday to Wednesday from 9.30am to 4pm. Call 096 71492 for more information.

Enable Ireland

Enable Ireland Mayo Services require volunteers in all areas of County Mayo to work with children with a disability. Volunteers usually work one-to-one with a child within their home but also within their community or at the centre in Castlebar. Training is provided. Bereavement Support Group

The weekly Bereavement Support Group meet every Wednesday at 11am in the Family Centre Knock. These meetings aim to help those who are grieving to find healing, hope and comfort. All are welcome. Contact Monica Morley on 094-9375320 for more information.
