Garden to commemorate Kathleen Lynn opens in Cong

There was a great turn out for the opening of the Kathleen Lynn Garden in Cong last Sunday, September 15 last. The garden has been created by the Cong Tidy Towns and commemorates the life of former Cong resident Dr Kathleen Lynn. Dr Lynn was the Chief Medical Officer with the Irish Citizens Army and founder of St Ultan’s Hospital in Dublin. The garden incorporates some of the large masonry blocks earmarked for the Cong Canal in the middle of the 19th century. The old funeral road into Cong incorporating the tradition of the Crusheens is also a central feature of the new garden.

All of the plants within the community garden have been specially selected and are all of a medicinal nature in keeping with Dr Lynns interest in herbal medicine.

Vincent Campbell, chairperson of Cong Tidy Towns said “this garden project would never have been completed without those whose assistance in many unique ways came together to make this project happen.” He expressed thanks to the local businesses and community groups and Mayo County Council for the support given to the project. The garden is located at the southern end of the large car park in Cong village. More information about the project is available on DicoverCong.com.
