Gilligan's Bar donates €1,500 to Responder Group

Gilligan's Bar on The Square has completed a year-long fundraising initiative, collecting cans to support local emergency services. The funds, totalling €1,500, have been donated to Claremorris South Responder Group and were used to purchase a defibrillator, a wall-mounted case, and to provide staff training on emergency response.

The bar expressed gratitude to Light House Diner and Catering and Michael Warde’s Pub for their assistance throughout the campaign. This year, Claremorris Tidy Towns was selected as the charity partner for the ongoing can collection effort.

Claremorris South Responder Group expressed their appreciation, with a spokesperson stating: “Thank you all so much, that's absolutely unreal. These funds will contribute towards a mobile defibrillator for one of our responders. This support is a significant boost for our group and the communities we serve.”

The initiative highlights the impact of community efforts in supporting local emergency response capabilities.

Lions and Red Cross combine for health event

Claremorris & District Lions Club, in conjunction with Claremorris Red Cross, will hold a Diabetes Awareness Day as well as blood glucose testing together with blood pressure checks in the Square (in front of Credit Union office) on Saturday, October 4th, from 12 noon to 3pm. The event is free of charge to participants.

The blood test is an initial test to alert people if they need to seek further medical attention in relation to the possible onset of Type 2 Diabetes. This is the third year that the Lions and the Red Cross have carried out these tests in Claremorris. The vast majority of attendees at the previous events had no issues.

Ladies Gaelic Football Club marks 40 years

The Hollymount community is set to come together on Saturday, October 4th, to celebrate a remarkable milestone – 40 years of Hollymount Ladies Gaelic Football.

The evening of celebration will take place in Cois Abhann Hall, Hollymount, beginning at 8pm, and promises to be a night of football memories, friendship, and community spirit.

One of the highlights of the event will be the launch of a commemorative book, edited by local journalist and author Óisin McGovern, chronicling the club’s proud history and achievements over the past four decades. The book captures the journey of the players, mentors, and supporters who have kept the spirit of Hollymount Ladies Gaelic Football alive and thriving since its foundation.

The celebration offers a perfect opportunity for past and present players, supporters, and friends of the club to reminisce on 40 years of stories, triumphs, and camaraderie.

Entertainment on the night will include live music by Streetwise, along with a full bar to ensure an enjoyable and lively atmosphere for all in attendance.

As the club reflects on its past, the evening will also shine a light on the enduring values of football, friendship, and community that have shaped Hollymount Ladies Gaelic Football for generations.

RSS vacancies in Claremorris area

The Rural Social Scheme (RSS) is looking for people to work 19.5 hours a week in a variety of roles, including administration, driving, outdoor, cleaning, after-school and childcare.

The vacancies are in the south Mayo area with positions available in Claremorris, Brickens, Ballindine and Irishtown and other areas.

“I have communities on to me all the time looking for workers,” Laura Commins, the RSS supervisor covering the area told the Western People. “Unfortunately, while I don’t like to refuse anyone, I can’t help them due to shortage of staff.

"We cover a lot of ground as it is and we have vacancies throughout the company – not just in the Claremorris area. We’d be delighted to hear from anyone that is interested in joining.”

The RSS is sponsored by the Department of Social Protection. Pobal carries out a payroll function, on behalf of the Department, and operates a help-desk facility for local development companies and Údarás na Gaeltachta, who are the implementing bodies. Pobal also has the responsibility for developing and implementing performance indicators for the scheme.

The aims of the scheme are to provide services to rural communities that use the skills and talents available among low-income farmers and fishing communities and to provide income support to low-income farmers. Participants must be 25 years or over and getting Farm Assist payment or if they are actively farming or fishing, they may qualify for the scheme if they are in receipt of certain other social welfare payments.

Laura can be contacted for full details on 087-1306945.
