Local Notes: Aisling Coyle, Swinford/Donegal wins Skin Therapist of the Year Award

Congratulations to Ashling Coyle on winning Skin Therapist of the Year in the Aesthetic Excellence Awards 2024 Ireland. Ashling is the granddaughter of the late Kathleen Foley, Swinford and the daughter of Kathleen and Patrick Coyle, Donegal.

Talk

Horticulturist Aisling Kilcullen will give a talk on Summer in the Garden in the meeting room on Lower Main Street, Swinford at 8pm on Tuesday, June 25. She will be happy to answer questions from the audience. All are welcome to attend. Talks are free to members. Non-members €5. Why not take this opportunity to join the club?

Workshop

The Butterfly Garden in collaboration with artist Tom Meskell invites you to take part in a project for Wave of Light 2024. Workshops for the sculpturing of large butterflies and lanterns will be held in Charlestown Arts Centre on June 25 (7-9pm) and fortnightly after that. The lanterns will be displayed and lit up pink and blue in The Butterfly Garden for this year’s Wave of Light remembrance event on October 15.

Table Quiz

Swinford Football Club will host a quiz night in Julian’s of Midfield on Friday, June 28, at 8.30pm. All proceeds in aid of Swinford FC. €40 for a table of four.

Queen of the Blath 2024

As Síamsa Sráide Street Festival Swinford turns 40 and Blath Na Feile celebrates its 10th year it has been decided to invite all past Blaths to compete in Queen of the Blath where one will be crowned the Queen of them all. This is open to anyone who has participated in the past. If you are interested in coming back to compete, contact Megan makeupwithmegand@gmail.com.

Swinford AC

Congratulations to Swinford Athletic Club members Pearse Gallagher and Darragh Reynolds who competed in the Triathlon Ireland National Junior Championship held in Camlough Newry recently. Both raced brilliantly and put in huge performances. Pearse is now the 2024 junior champ and will go on to represent Ireland in the European Championship in Turkey in August. Darragh won the youth category. Congratulations to you both and best of luck to Pearse in August, representing his club and country.

Track and Field Games

Congratulations to all the Swinford Athletic Club members who competed at the recent Connacht Track and Field games. Swinford AC members achieved 6 new Connacht records: U13 Emma Nolan Javelin with a throw of 28.74m, U15 100m Patrick Cuddy in a time of 11.67s and U15 long jump with a jump of 5.47m, U16 boys Cathal McNicholas broke two records with a discuss throw of 43.43m and shot put 13.90m and U19 Caitlin Hughes with a 3000m run in 10.32.79 s.

Congrats to all the participants all putting in huge performances with many personal bests achieved. Participants: Patrick Cuddy, Jimmy Fulham, Sue Sue Nolan, Sarah Groarke, Rachel McNicholas, Cathal McNicholas, Caitlin Hughes, Siobhan Hyland, Rory Gruddy, Kevin Groarke, Aoibheann Devaney and Caoimhe Hughes.

Kelly’s Walk 2 Rome

Cathal’s journey across Europe has begun and he is now making his way across The Hauts De - France Region of Northern Eastern France as he makes his way from Canterbury to Rome on his charity walk in aid of Mayo Parkinson's Association and Children's Health Foundation Crumlin. Cathal is extremely grateful for all the continuous support he has been receiving from Swinford People at home and all over the world.

Trip

Time to Shine closing date

The closing date for entries to ‘Time to Shine’ talent competition is fast approaching. Members of The Railway Players will be in Mellett’s Auctioneers office on Saturday, June 29, from 11am to 5pm to facilitate anyone who wants more information or to return or collect entry forms. There is a cash prize fund of €1000 and trophies to be divided between 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed finalists. Entry is open to O16s and U16s. Lotto

The numbers drawn in the Swinford Community lotto draw held on June 17, were 8, 22, 27 and 28. €70 vouchers were won by Connie Hanley, Killasser and A McManus, c/o The Sheepwalk Bar; €35 was won by Pauline Thompson, Meelick and Angela and John, c/o Susan Nolan. The jackpot for the latest draw was €14,400.

Golf

At Swinford Golf Club, the latest 18-hole Stableford competition showcased the depth of talent emerging from the junior ranks, emphasizing the club's successful youth development programs. Under favourable weather conditions, Kevin Irwin and Tom Horkan, both products of the club’s Junior Golf program, stood out with their extraordinary performances.

Kevin surged to the forefront with a score of 43 points, not merely playing the course but mastering it with the ease of a seasoned golfer. Hot on his heels was Tom who carded an impressive 42 points.

These young fellas certainly made a statement, the future is here, and it's incredibly promising. Gents 18 Hole Stableford - 1st Kevin Irwin 43 points, 2nd Tom Horkan 42 points, 3rd Sean Golden 40 points.

The late Mary Langan

The death took place of Mary Langan, Carralackey, Kilmovee, and Leicester UK recently deepest sympathy is extended to her sister Bridie Duffy, Carralackey, and also to the extended families and other relatives of Mary. May Mary rest in peace.

The late Canon John Walsh

The death took place of Canon John Walsh retired PP Aughamore, Ballyhaunis, peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, in the wonderful care of the staff of Sonas Nursing Home, Knock. Canon John was a native of Gurranebawn, Lavally, Tuam, Co Galway and was pre-deceased by his parents Michael and Bridget (Hillie), brother Richard and sister Ann.

Canon John is survived by his brothers Paddy, Tommy, Mickie, Gerry, Seamus and Henry, his sisters Sr Mary, Nellie and Carmel, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces, Archbishop Francis Duffy, retired Archbishop Michael Neary and all the priests of the Tuam Diocese, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Canon John reposed in Gavin’s Funeral Home, Knox Street, Ballyhaunis, on Thursday, June 13, with removal at 8pm to St Joseph’s Church, Aghamore. Funeral Mass was held on Friday, June 14, at 12 noon followed by burial in the church grounds. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
