Moy Singers get ready for a very special Spring Concert

The Moy Singers, a 45-member four-part choral choir, is now in its 38th year. No small feat for a community-based singing group.

The choir will perform its first concert this year at the Great National Hotel on Saturday, April 20th, commencing at 8pm. Alf Potter, who has been the choir's accompanist since 2017, has now taken over the reins as musical director and has created a beautiful and diverse show of new and previous pieces, ranging from Simon and Garfunkel and Mozart to some Broadway musicals numbers.

The choir is delighted to have secured Marc Roberts as the Spring Concert's very special guest, especially as he is from right here in North Mayo - Crossmolina to be exact.

Marc has a huge local fanbase and is best known for representing Ireland in the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest with his hit song Mysterious Woman, being pipped to the top spot by the UK’s Catriona and the Waves with Love Shine a Light. Since then, Marc has produced six studio albums and has written for and performed with some of Ireland's most successful artists, Daniel O’Donnell, Brian Kennedy and Charlie McGettigan to name a few. Marc is also a presenter with Galway Bay FM.

Can history repeat Co Mayo's success at this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden? Liam Geddes, who has guested with the Moy Singers multiple times and is the son of current choir secretary Deirdre Geddes, is a singer, songwriter and music producer. Liam has written and produced Latvia's entry this year for performer Dons and it is a hotly-tipped contender. We will certainly be fully behind our Mayo man come May 7th!

This year’s diary is busy for the members of the Moy Singers as following the Spring Concert they are appearing with and supporting the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre's 30th-anniversary fundraising event. The organisation is celebrating 30 years of supporting the survivors of sexual abuse and violence in Ballina and Mayo with an uplifting night of music and song in Knockranny House Hotel, Westport on Thursday, May 2nd. Tickets are available from their Facebook page.

The Moy Singers Choir has represented Ballina, Mayo and Ireland throughout Europe and America over the years at various music festivals and competitions and they are delighted to tour again, the first since 2018. The choir will travel to Budapest in June with a 30-strong entourage and fly the Irish flag.

The choir looks forward to welcoming all to its Spring Concert and tickets can be purchased from all choir members, the Tourist Office on Pearse Street in Ballina and at the venue, the Great National Hotel, Ballina.
