On a foggy, freezing cold night, the Westport minor camogie team captured the Galway ‘B’ 12-a-side championship. It was an epic and sporting final played against their great rivals Castlebar Mitchels in their own backyard.

A very determined, strong and skilful Castlebar side dominated the first half of normal time and in the inclement conditions went in at half-time with a commanding four-point lead, 1-2 to 0-1.

Westport showed more intent in the second half and traded points with Castlebar but still trailed by four points heading into the last five minutes of normal time. By this stage Westport were finding their groove but time was running out fast. In the final five minutes Westport exerted ferocious pressure scoring 1-1 to send the game into extra time.

Westport had the momentum heading into extra time and outscored their opponents 1-1 to 0-2 in the first half of extra time. The Westport girls finished strong in the second period of extra time to finish convincing winners on a final scoreline of 3-8 to 1-8.

It was a fantastic end to a great season for Westport Camogie Club that started last February and culminated in Westport capturing the Minor B Galway championship and the Rose Nixon Cup for the Connacht junior championship.
