Shield bliss for Mayo ladies in Royal County

The Mayo darts team who won the All-Ireland Shield in Co Meath last weekend.

There were great scenes of celebration in Co Meath last weekend as the Mayo ladies claimed the shield title in the All-Ireland Inter-County Darts ‘A’ Championships.

The competition, which attracts the very best throwers from across the country, took place at the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim.

The weekend had got underway encouragingly for Mayo on Saturday when, in the group stages, they defeated Laois 4-3. However, the Green and Red were to suffer narrow losses to both Kilkenny and Galway which placed them into the shield.

After coming through against Limerick in the quarter-finals, they met and beat Laois again, and the score was just the same as their first round clash. In the final they had it much more comfortable when seeing off Kerry 4-1 to win the title.

It was a tough weekend for the men’s side however, as they exited at the last 16 of the championship. After wins over Offaly and Westmeath in the group, they fell to a heavy defeat in the first round of the knockout stages to eventual semi-finalists Carlow.
