Sarsfields have the semis firmly in their sights
Diarmuid Duffy will be central to Ballinrobe's attempt to win away to Ardnaree Sarsfields and reach the intermediate semis.
Ballinrobe will be hoping to avoid a second consecutive quarter-final exit while Ardnaree Sarsfields will look to reach the semi-finals for the second year in a row. Those are just two of the many subplots for this intriguing tie that kicks off the intermediate championship quarter-finals.
This will be the third year in a row the two sides have met in championship. Ballinrobe defeated Ardnaree comfortably when the two clubs met at this stage back in 2024, but it was the meeting in the group stage last year in Sean Duffy Park that saw everyone stand up and take notice of Ardnaree as a rising force in the Mayo club scene.
The hosts would love a repeat of last year when Nathan Roddy’s two-point free secured the win in a game that only saw Ardnaree take the lead in second-half injury-time. A surprise package last year, it is no surprise that Ardnaree made the quarter-finals on this occasion. They were always in control against Kilmaine while a second-half scoring blitz saw them put Islandeady to the sword and book a home quarter-final, although they needed a late brace of points against Kiltimagh to ensure they remained unbeaten.
Cathal Noone, John Timlin, Ethan Convey and Dylan Sweeney are among their attacking weapons, and they will need to fire against a Ballinrobe team that are getting better with every game.
A poor showing against Ballyhaunis in the opening game saw them up against it. They did enough to see off The Neale to get back on track but the Robesiders clicked into gear with a rout of Castlebar Mitchels ‘B’.
The return of All-Ireland winner Diarmuid Duffy is a huge boost to the defence to aid rising star Barry Langan. Cian Maye is another bright prospect in the middle of the field and up front, Ewan Duffy and Cian O’Connell are a key duo from placed balls and open play, particularly with their two-point ability.
Ballinrobe will not have forgotten the pain of losing to Ardnaree last year and they will be determined to put things right. But beating Ardnaree in their own back yard is no simple task.
