From the Showgrounds to captaining his country - Seamus Coleman is one of the good guys

The term ‘legend’ is thrown around quite a bit these days.

In many situations it is justified, some not so much, but when describing former Sligo Rovers man Seamus Coleman, it is fully deserved.

The Republic of Ireland and Everton captain is a true professional on the pitch. Off the pitch, he is the same nature - a thorough gentleman.

I first met ‘Seamie’ in my home county of Wicklow in the summer of 2010. Coleman is a Donegal native, who hails from Killybegs, but not many are aware that his father’s family are from Tinahely in County Wicklow.

Before his trip to the Garden County, Coleman had just won the English Championship play-off final while on loan with Blackpool. Years later he would go on to make over 350 top-flight appearances for Everton and become captain of his club and country.

This week, I crossed paths with Coleman again.

While in Dublin attending Ireland’s friendly victory over Hungary, I got the opportunity to approach Seamus in the Irish team hotel earlier in the day. I had a personalised flag with me - a tribute to my late father, Simon.

The Colemans were fantastic when my father took ill a few years ago. Signed pictures, one of his Everton shirts, a video message - you name it - Seamus’ generosity shone and was a bright light during that difficult period.

Coleman, Robbie Brady, Shane Duffy and Enda Stevens all stood in for a picture and held up my flag. It was something small but it meant a lot to me and would have meant much more to my father.

The experienced 35-year-old defender, who was signed by the Toffees for just £60,000 all those years ago, still has plenty to offer at club and international level.

From the Showgrounds to representing his country at a major tournament, Coleman is one of the good guys in the sport.
