Belleek is haven for young cross country stars

Runners look to establish their positions at the start of the 3rd and 4th Class Girls race at the Mayo NS Cross Country Championships which were held in Belleek, Ballina.
Athletics: The 2024 Mayo National Schools Cross Country Championships were hosted by Moy Valley Athletic Club in Belleek on Wednesday, September 25. Area finals were held in Erris, North, South, East and West Mayo over the preceding two weeks with a record number of over 2,500 athletes competing.
At the Mayo finals, 513 qualifying athletes represented their schools with pride, grit and determination in an effort to secure a place in the Connacht Schools Cross Country Championships which will take place in Mohill Community College, Co Leitrim next Saturday, October 12.
The course was in great condition with dry weather making the day enjoyable for all. All races were very competitive with new athletes pushing those who previously competed to the line.
The Quay National School in Ballina won three of the four team events, with Scoil Phádraig Westport denying them a clean sweep with victory in the 3rd and 4th Class race for boys.
Well done to all the athletes who competed and to their teachers and parents who travelled with them, and also to Moy Valley AC who set up the course and Mayo Athletic Co. Board who helped organise the event and ensured its smooth running.
