Athletics: Another record breaking performance has delivered Ballina racewalker Seamus Clarke a significant victory on the continent. The Moy Valley AC athlete won gold at an U18 meet in sunny Palafrugell on Saturday.

Clarke was part of a team of 20 Irish U18 athletes competing in Spain over the weekend in advance of the European U18 Championships to be held in Slovakia next month, and hot on the heels of his Irish Schools National title last weekend, the 17-year-old got the Irish team off to a good start with a win in the U18 boys 5000m walk. Clarke set a new European Athletics Promotion (EAP) record in the process.

He had entered the competition with a personal best time of 21m31s for the 5000m distance and posted a new personal best time of 21m25s, which also lowers the Irish U18 record that he currently holds.

The Palafrugell-Costa Brava Athletics Meeting is part of the European Athletics Promotion circuit (EAP) and a Spanish Athletic Federation International event.
