Nothing half bad about Colette's year on the road

Castlebar 5k women's race winner Colette Tuohy leads Evin McHale over Lough Lannagh bridge

The 2025 Western People Mayo Sports Stars Awards take place on Saturday, February 7 at Breaffy House Resort.

You could say that Colette Tuohy does nothing by half measures. And yet it’s at half measures, or half marathons at least, that there’s no one can quite compare with the racing queen of Castlebar.

In August 2025, Colette won her age grade at the National Half-Marathon Championships in Tullamore. The first Mayo woman to cross the line on the day, her time of 1:29.36 was so quick it helped secure teammates 20 years her junior silver medals in the W35 team competition.

Colette Tuohy is one of the greatest servants Mayo Athletic Club has ever had, on and off the track – or road, grass and mud for that matter. The ultimate all-rounder, it was also confirmed last year that never before has any woman in the W55 age category ran the Dublin City Marathon faster than when Colette clocked 3:09.58 in October 2024.

The national record holder returned to the same event last October and once again was the first woman from Mayo to finish the race and deservedly won a national bronze in her category.

As well as her consistency, it’s perhaps Colette’s versatility that sets her apart from all the rest. After all, she began 2025 by running a 400m leg indoors for the Mayo AC senior team at the National Senior Mixed Relays yet ended it in November by running 6000m outdoors representing her country at the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International in Leeds.

In between, she won gold in the 3000m at the National Masters Indoor Championships, gold at the Streets of Galway 8k and gold at the Westport Half-Marathon, not to mention her array of medals won at a whole range of smaller, more local events of which she has always been a great supporter.

The 2025 Western People Mayo Sports Stars Awards take place next Saturday, February 7, at Breaffy House Resort. The special guest for this year’s awards function is Kerry GAA legend Tomás Ó Sé.

Tickets for the gala presentation banquet, which includes a drinks reception, a four-course meal, the awards ceremony and entertainment, are priced at €70pp and are on sale to the general public.
