World-renowned medic will be laid to rest in Ballaghaderreen

Ballaghaderreen-native and world-famous medic, Dr John Aidan Carney will be laid to rest in his homeplace on Friday 

Dr Carney, who passed away earlier this year, was a renowned pathologist and endocrine researcher who spent the majority of his working life at the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Born in Ballaghaderreen, in 1934, his research saw him discover a rare genetic discorder that has become known as the ‘Carney Complex.’ The disease is characterised by increased risk of tumours growing in different parts of the body.

A graduate of UCD, Dr Carney moved to the Mayo Clinic in 1962, swiftly becoming a consultant and retiring from the facility in 2018 at the age of 80.

Mass of the Resurrection in St. Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen on Friday, May at 12 noon followed by interment in Kilcolman cemetery.
