Woman and two children die in South Mayo tragedy

A woman and two children have died following this afternoon's road traffic collision on the N17 near Claremorris.

Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of the collision on the N17 at Castlegar.

It is understood a car collided with a lorry around 2pm today.

The driver (female) and two girls who were passengers in the car, were fatally injured.

No other injuries have been reported.

The bodies retrieved from the crash are being taken to Mayo University Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Local councillor Richard Finn said it has been a "sad day for Mayo", following another tragedy in Swinford this morning that saw a couple killed in a house fire.

"It's a very sad day for the county and our hearts to out to the families of all involved," Cllr Finn said.

The road in both directions is currently closed and is expected to remain closed for a number of hours. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí have advised motorists to avoid the N17 north of Claremorris if possible this evening.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
