Westport pub's outdoor seating plan approved

Lofty's bar, Westport

An Bord Pleanala has upheld a decision to grant planning a licence for outdoor seating and tables outside a Westport pub.

The appeal related to an area of public pavement to the front of Lofty’s Bar at North Mall in Westport. Lofty’s bar is located at the junction of North Mall and Casltebar Street.

Mayo County Council granted permission for the temporary last year but the decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanala. The appeal submitted by William Reidy of South Mall, Westport contended that the location was unsuitable due to neighbouring residential properties. Concerns were also expressed about noise disturbance and the potential impact on mobility impaired pedestrians.

An Bord Pleanala found in favour of the pub stating that the temporary use of the street as an outdoor seating area would not seriously injure the amenities of the area.

Planning was granted subject to a number of conditions. These included agreeing with Mayo County Council the size and layout of the seating area and ensuring it does not impact pedestians and wheelchair users.
