Westport bridge is 'deadly dangerous'
Independent Cllr John O'Malley raised the issue.
A councillor wants Mayo Co Council to carry out remedial works on a bridge along the Carraholly Road towards Westport Golf Club, saying it poses an immediate danger to motorists.
Cllr John O'Malley raised the matter at the recent meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, noting that he previously sought funding for the bridge.
“I brought down an engineer to look at it and he agreed it is very dangerous, with an eight-foot drop. The council came down and put bollards and things outside of it, but this has only narrowed up the road.
"Believe me, there will be a bad accident, and it will be a head-on, unless they put signage up. There is overgrowth there and it would all want to be cleared off because people coming down from Westport cannot see that narrow bridge until it is too late. I met a car coming fairly fast towards me on the wrong side and barely missed him. Even this morning someone hit a bollard and knocked it. So please take a look and see if the overgrowth can be taken away because it is deadly dangerous.”
