West Mayo mourns loss of dedicated community man

The late Declan Nevin was a much-loved figure in his community.

Warm tributes have been paid to a Mayo publican who was at the heart of life in his community.

Declan Nevin, of Mullaun, Newport, Co. Mayo and Nevin’s Bar, Main Street, Newport passed away peacefully on March 18 surrounded by his loving family.

The Newport publican was a hugely popular and influential figure in his town and glowing tributes have been paid to a true community man.

Glenhest Rovers soccer club paid tribute to their former manager.

“Dec gave over three decades of service to Glenhest Rovers and dedicated so much of his time, energy and passion to the club he loved. Over the years he held many roles, including Chairperson and Manager, and always put the club and its people first.

"A great character and a straight talker, Dec was always generous with his time and could be relied upon to help out in any way he could. He was always there when needed.” The club honoured Declan with a lifetime achievement award when it celebrated it’s 50th anniversary.

Declan previously represented Burrishoole GAA in the 1980s and won a West Mayo title with the club.

“ Declan was always a great supporter of our club, never hesitating and always generous.

He played for Burrishoole in the 1980s, and was part of the team that won a West Mayo title as goalkeeper. In recent years, his support of our Mothers & Others group was especially valued.

Declan is a huge loss to our community and will always be remembered as a friend of Burrishoole GAA,” said the club.

The Newport Grainne Uaile festival said Declan’s community contribution will ‘never be forgotten.’

"Declan was a gentleman through and through. His love for the community and pride in Newport shone through in everything he did. He never sought recognition, but his contribution will always be remembered and deeply appreciated," said the festival.
