Weir wants council to take charge of historic North Mayo bridge

Cllr Seamus Weir said he wants a historic bridge put on the roads programme this year.

A local councillor has urged Mayo County Council to put an old bridge with historical significance on its roads programme for 2024.

Cllr Seamus Weir raised the matter by way of a notice of motion in January calling on Ballina Municipal District to take charge of the bridge at Deel Castle crossing the river Deel which General Humbert crossed with his forces in 1798.

However, the necessary work to bring the bridge and adjoining road up to a standard meeting the council’s criteria for taking it in charge would cost €116,000.

At last week’s meeting of the municipal district, Cllr Weir said the cost was "horrendous" but added that something needs to be done to address the situation.

“We need to put this on the roads programme. If we leave it, it will never be done and if nothing is done, the residents might have to close it themselves.

“We need to continue to look into this road,” he said.
