Gardaí in Ballyhaunis last night seized a vehicle after the driver was caught driving in darkness without their lights switched on.
It was subsequently discovered that the driver was sitting on their seat belt, they were uninsured and the NCT on the vehicle had expired over a year ago.
Gardaí said that the vehicle was seized as a result and court proceedings will follow for the driver.
They advised that motorists should wear their seat belt at all times because it is the law, but also for important safety reasons.
"Tonight in Ballyhaunis , this vehicle caught the attention of Mayo Roads Policing Unit for the wrong reasons."
"No driving lights switched on during hours of darkness. Driver sitting on the seat belt. NCT expired over a year. Driver had no insurance."
“You should wear your seat belt at all times no matter how long or short the journey is. A collision can happen in a spilt second and even hard braking can cause serious injury to you if you're not wearing your seatbelt,” they said.
