Uisce Éireann 'hiding' over Newport sewage treatment plant

Cllr John O'Malley said locals in Newport were looking for answers.

Mayo's five TDs need to be proactive in progressing the promised Newport Sewage Treatment Plant, according to local councillors who have heard nothing from Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) about the matter despite repeated calls for clarification.

The matter was raised by Cllr Brendan Mulroy at the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District (MD) last week.

“This MD has still had no response to our calls for updates from Irish Water. Only Dara Calleary TD was in contact with Irish Water but other than that we have had no response.”

Cllr Peter Flynn expressed thanks to Minister Calleary who he said was the only one out of five local TDs "who took the trouble to reply”, which was "not good enough".

“They (the five local TDs) are the ones who should be called to account. This scheme should have been done in the last ten years."

Cllr John O’Malley said a community group in Newport had been trying to get in touch with Uisce Éireann but could not find a name or a contact.

“It is not good enough to keep hiding all the time and not answer the questions needed answering. We need to know what is the estimated time of the project being progressed and finished. The community group also tell me that nobody ever goes near the treatment plant because a man stuck a branch in it three weeks ago “and it is just left there and nobody in Irish Water is even heeding it.”
