Tributes have been paid to Tommy Higgins - a beloved member of the Claremorris community - following his death.
His Funeral Mass will take place today - Wednesday, December 11, at 2 p.m.
Many local businesses have elected to close their doors for the day to honour the entrepreneur.
Kean’s Garden Centre & Electrical of Claremorris, for instance, announced in a Facebook post that they will close at 1:30 p.m. today.
They wrote: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tommy Higgins, Patricia’s father. Tommy was a dedicated entrepreneur in Claremorris, and alongside his wife Kathleen, he helped establish the Green Stores, the Dalton Inn, and supported numerous other local businesses. His passion for business was unmatched, and much of the spirit of our business can be attributed to him.”
Claremorris Swimming Club also extended their sympathies to the family of Tommy. They said in a Facebook post: “Tommy was one of the originals and helped transport the famous mermaid pool to Claremorris 55 years ago.”
Claremorris Drama and Fringe Festival also took to Facebook to share their condolences: “Tommy was a great Supporter of the Claremorris Players Drama Group, he provided transport to the group by providing his company van to transport sets and props all over Ireland. He was part of the backroom team when the Claremorris Players Group won the All-Ireland Open Final in Athlone. He also helped the group to win the Confined All-Ireland Finals in Gorey. When the New Town Hall was opened both Tommy and Kathleen were deeply involved in the development of the Town Hall and the setting up of the Drama Festival.”
