Thousands of people participate in successful Mayo.ie Western People Women's Mini Marathon 

Ellen Moran crosses the line in 37 minutes and 42 seconds

Thousands of women, teenagers and children gathered at the Market Square in Ballina today for the Mayo.ie Western People West of Ireland Women's Mini Marathon in the North Mayo capital.

Three Mayo women finished in the podium places.

Ellen Moran, from Aughagower in Westport, of the Galway City Harriers athletics club winning the race in a time of 37 minutes, 42 seconds.

She said she was delighted and thrilled to win the hugely popular race, which took place in sunshine and warm and dry conditions.

Sinead Whitelaw and Sarina Tuffy, both from Ballina were second and third finishing in times of 38:27 and 39:04 respectively.

The special guest who sounded the started horn was local Fianna Fáil Councillor Annie May Reape.

More than 1,900 women and 800 children took part in the Women's Mini Marathon and the Mini-Mini events.

Organised by the Mayo Sports Partnership in conjunction with Mayo.ie and the Western People, the event was a huge success during the second consecutive staging in Ballina.
