Tenders received to improve major Mayo road link

Cllr Damien Ryan

Mayo County Council has received seven tenders to improve the strategic link between the N84 Galway to Ballinrobe Road and the R332. However, funding allocation for the work has not yet been secured.

Responding to queries from councillors at the February meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, Director of Services Tom Gilligan said the seven tenders were now being considered.

"We will then write to the Department to get them to accept it and to receive our allocation. A concern I have is regarding the recent Storm Chandra and the implications that has had on loans and flood relief schemes. While I have huge sympathy for those who suffered, I do not think funding supplied to those areas should be detrimental to Mayo and I have made that case to the Department and encourage you to contact your Oireachtas members also and make sure the allocations we get will be fair in order to deliver our programme. The R332 is a priority this year and we want to be sure we get that contract."

Cllr Damien Ryan commented: “We got €1.2 million for this road last year so this is to complete the vacuum for the remaining works. There is no way Mayo County Council shouldn’t be to the forefront if Galway can sign a contract last week for €4 million. It’s on the agenda for a long time and it will be very disappointing if we don’t get the grant.”

Cllr Patsy O’Brien added: “We are talking €12m to €14m for the whole project and we have to lobby all we can as this is so important.”
