Tallies indicate a no vote is looking likely in both referendums in Mayo

Votes were cast yesterday in the two referendums

It is looking likely that county Mayo will follow the trend emerging in the rest of the country and will vote No-No in the family referendum and care referendum.

While counting is still ongoing, a partial tally of two boxes from east Mayo taken by the Western People is showing a resounding victory for the No vote in both referendums.

One box from Kilkelly showed ten yes votes for the care referendum to 37 no votes with 19 yes votes and 38 no votes for the family referendum in the same box.

A partial tally of boxes from Swinford show 17 yes votes and 57 no votes for the family referendum and 20 yes votes and 52 no votes for the care referendum.

Neither of the main political parties, Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil, are taking part in the tallying process in Castlebar.

Aontú is the only political party conducting a tally.

Tommy Horan, Swinford Municipal District local election candidate for Aontu, who canvassed for a ‘No-No’ vote, said the party expected the country to vote in this way.

“We knew all along there would be this kind of result. We found a lot of anger from people on the doorsteps towards the government, who they felt insulted their intelligence during these referendums.”
