Saolta chief appointed to new HSE role

Tony Canavan has been named as a Regional Executive Officer for the HSE.

The HSE has announced the appointment of regional executive officers (REOs) for the six new HSE health regions.

Tony Canavan has been appointed REO for the HSE West and North West, a region comprising Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, West Cavan, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo.

Mr Canavan is currently CEO of the Saolta University Health Care Group and has worked in the health services in the West for over 30 years, including as General Manager of Mayo University Hospital.

Each of the REOs will report to the HSE Chief Executive Bernard Gloster.

Service delivery in the new regions will begin on March 1.

Devolution of authority to the new health regions will take place on a phased basis over this year and the next.

The six health regions will replace hospital groups (HGs) and community healthcare organisations (CHOs).

The new appointments follow a Public Appointments Service-led process.

The regional chairs will receive a salary of €257,000.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said: "I’m delighted to welcome the six new regional executive officer appointees who will work with the CEO and myself to ensure that this reorganisation of our health and social care services delivers for patients."
