Retiring TD to be given civic reception

The retirement of long-standing Fine Gael TD Michael Ring will be a loss to people around the county, a local councillor has stated.

Independent Cllr John O’Malley raised the matter at the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting last week, saying: “This is our first meeting since Micheal Ring announced his retirement from politics and I would like to pay tribute to him for all his hard work over the years for this town and all towns around and for what he has done for the county.

"He has been a dedicated worker and even the Taoiseach has said he was the hardest worker in Dáil Éireann. He never hesitated to help, no matter what politics people were and I thank him sincerely also for his help to me over the years with many problems solved. I think the people of Westport and the whole county will be at a loss with him gone.”

Fine Gael Cllr Peter Flynn said he wholly endorsed the sentiments, adding that it was inevitable Deputy Ring would be retiring sooner or later and proposed that the municipal district host a civic reception in his honour in early 2025 to mark "all he has done for the county and country and his 45 years of service to Mayo, be it as a town or county councillor or TD".

The proposal was agreed by all members.
