Progress report issued on several housing projects in Mayo
Dozens of new housing units are being developed in the Castlebar Municipal District, with many nearing completion.
In an update to councillors for last week's monthly meeting, Mayo County Council management gave a progress report on various projects, including the construction of four new house at Charles Street where work is expected to be completed by 2025.
Planning permission has been granted for four houses at Newtown with tenders for construction to issue shortly and completion expected in early 2027. At Ellison Street, the planning process is in train with the Department of Housing for the development of 12 houses, with completion expected in mid-to-late 2027.
The Peter McVerry Trust has permission to develop eight one-bedroom units in the vacant Ellison House property on Ellison Street. This project is currently under review due to a legal process in relation to the transfer of the property to an alternative approved housing body.
At Barrack Bridge, a refurbishment programme is underway in three vacant on-street houses as the council works to bring them back into use, while the expected completion date has yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, a council proposal to develop 66 houses at Lawn Road is now open to public submissions, which can be sent to the council planning department up to November 26th next. All things going to plan, the development completion date is estimated for the end of 2027.
Additionally, on the outskirts of town, a contractor has been appointed to develop 37 units as part of Phase 3 of the housing development at Lios na Circe, with works expected to begin in November and completion due in October 2027, while at Turlough Road, a 33-house council project is in progress, with a completion date yet to be confirmed.
Elsewhere in Castlebar Municipal District, nine houses were completed earlier this year in Carnacon and tenancies are now in place. In Ballyvary, works are substantially complete on 12 houses and letters of offer have been issued to prospective tenants, while in Lahardane, 19 houses are under construction, the contractor is on site, progress to date is good and project completion is expected by early 2027.
