Mayo County Council has warned dog owners of dangerous toxins that could be present on river and lake shorelines this summer.
Mayo County Council has warned dog owners of dangerous toxins that could be present on river and lake shorelines this summer.
In warmer weather, natural algal blooms and cyanobacteria become more prevalent which can produce dangerous toxins.
These toxins have the potential to cause illness in humans and animal fatalities, especially dogs.
The county council say the "blooms can appear as green or blue-green streaks resembling paint at the water surface, or silky scums along shorelines."
The public is advised to not touch algal accumulations on the shoreline and to keep children and pets away from the water’s edge if algae is present.
Pet owners are encouraged to contact their vet quickly if their dog becomes unexpectedly sick after swimming in a lake or river.
