Positive update on West Mayo Greenway project

The proposed development will improve traffic safety.
There is positive progress on the long-anticipated new Greenway route through the town of Newport.
The National Roads Office in Mayo will be using a Part 8 application for the development today (Tuesday).
The details of the proposed project will be available for viewing on the online consultation portal at localgov.ie.
The plans can also be viewed at the Mayo County Council offices in Castlebar or Westport Municipal District Office.
The plans will be on display until July 23 and submissions can be made online or in writing until August 7 2025. Following this, councillors will rule on the project.
Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn said it was “good news” for the area with the development expected to improve traffic safety for Greenway users.
“There really has been positive progress. The engineers have listened to the requests from people to avoid crossing over the road on two separate occasions. It follows parallel to the existing Greenway,” said Cllr Flynn.
“It takes away all of the issues we have had with safety getting through Newport which is great news,” he added.
Cllr Flynn urged the public to engage with the process. He praised the co-operation and efforts of local landowners. He said this spirit of collaboration can serve as a template for future Greenways in the county.
