Plans in place to address 'wicked' speeding in area of Ballina
Market Road, Ballina
There are plans in place to provide speed ramps in an area with ‘wicked’ speeding in Ballina.
Cllr John O’Hara raised a notice of motion calling for the Ballina Municipal District to provide two speed ramps on Market Road, Ballina alongside Tesco supermarket in the light of the speed of cars and in the interest of health and safety for everyone.
In response, executive engineer with the Ballina Municipal District Orla Bourke said the Draft Ballina Local Transport Plan includes short term measures at various locations in Ballina.
Ms Bourke said the need for upgraded pedestrian facilities at Market Road has been identified. Once the draft plan is finalized, she said the MD will seek funding from the National Transport Authority to advance these proposals.
Cllr O’Hara welcomed this response.
“The business people in this area have said the speed is wicked,” he said.
Cllr Annie May Reape said it is time for a greater debate regarding the installation of speed ramps in Ballina.
Cllr Michael Loftus said the Council was ‘doing the job of the Gardaí’ by putting in speed ramps and suggested the Gardaí be invited in to an upcoming meeting of the MD to discuss speeding in Ballina.
“Speed is the big issue here and so is the enforcement around speed,” he said.
