Plan to turn former cigar factory into recycling centre attracts opposition

An Bord Pleanála will adjudicate on the decision.

A decision to grant planning permission to change a former cigar factory in Ballaghaderreen into a recycling centre has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála, writes Trevor Quinn.

Roscommon County Council previously approved planning permission to Sean Curran, Managing Director of Barna Recycling, to recommission the building.

The original application received a total of eight submissions from concerned residents in the area and the council decision has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála by local homeowners.

Some residents expressed concern that the proposed development would lead to an increase in trucks through "dangerous road junctions" in an area where accidents have occurred.

It was stated the building would be changed into a clean waste recycling facility used for the packaging, sorting and distribution of recyclable materials. A decision is due by July 9.
