No housing stock for Ballina’s homeless

A recent meeting of Ballina Municipal District heard there are no spare or vacant houses to offer to those facing homelessness.

Mayo County Council has no vacant houses to offer people facing homelessness in the Ballina Municipal District.

Cllr Seamus Weir asked at last week’s meeting of the municipal district if there were houses available for people who have to move out of their rented or other accommodation for any reason. He said he has received correspondence from someone who has to move out on March 1.

Administrative officer Carmel Murphy said the district handles every situation on a case-by-case basis but it ultimately does not have any vacant houses to offer to those facing homelessness. She said they are often in a position where they can offer emergency accommodation.

In January, there were two homeless cases in the district. The municipal council does have a stock of 13 vacant houses which are currently undergoing works. Head of the district Declan Turnbull said they are hoping to get these turned around soon to offer to people on the social housing list.
