A new Cathaoirleach will be officially named on Friday.

Belmullet man Sean Carey is expected to named as the new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council later this week.

The Fianna Fail councillor looks set to take over the roie from Fine Gael’s John O’Hara at Friday’s AGM of Mayo County Council.

With Fianna Fail and Fine Gael agreeing to join forces following last year’s local elections, the two main parties hold the balance of power in the council chamber.

Fianna Fail will be nominating Cllr Carey for the position at Friday’s meeting.

He has served as Cathaoirleach of the Westport Belmullet Municipal District on three occasions.

Cllr O’Hara steps down following a successful year as the county’s first citizen.
