New masts have not improved telephone coverage, says councillor

Cllr Cyril Burke has questioned why, with the number of new masts in rural areas, phone service has not improved for local people in places such as Belcarra
A local councillor claims there has been no improvement in the mobile telephone service in certain rural areas in Mayo, despite telecommunications masts being installed in these locations.
Fine Gael Cllr Cyril Burke highlighted this issue at last week’s Castlebar Municipal District meeting and suggested that Mayo Co Council contact telephone service providers to ask why service has not improved and when - and if - it will improve for residents.
“There was so much objection to masts but they are in a lot of places now, but there is no extra service for people.
“In Belcarra and Ballintubber, masts have been put up but there has still been no improvement in the service.”
Cllr Burke asked that the council write to telecommunications companies about this issue and ask if improvements to service were coming down the line.
Head of the district David Mellett agreed to write to the companies on behalf of the county council.
