Minister Dara Calleary has announced that the new school build for Scoil Iosa Ballina has been sanctioned to proceed to tender stage.

The new school will be a 13 classroom plus support rooms building and will be constructed in the existing site at Convent Road Ballina.

"I am thrilled to announce this news and wish to thank my colleague Minister Norma Foley for her support," he said.

"Scoil Iosa is a wonderful school, blessed with fantastic staff, very dedicated boards of management and vibrant school communities over the years. The physical core of the current building dates back over 150 years-this new build will ensure a proper match of the physical building to the amazing school ethos."

"I have worked closely with the school principal Michael Tunney, the Deputy Principal Monica Duffy, board of management chair Christy McDonagh and the staff to progress this-I will continue to work on it until we open the doors of the new building."

"My colleague Cllr Annie May Reape has been relentless in applying pressure on me to move this on."
