'Mickey Mouse' roundabout is 'road tragedy waiting to happen'
The roundabout was the scene of a recent accident.
A ‘Mickey Mouse’ roundabout is 'a road tragedy waiting to happen', it has been claimed.
Cllr Ger Deere said the roundabout at Barrack Bridge in Castlebar has been the site of a number of accidents and near-misses. He told a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District of his serious concerns unless action is taken at the busy intersection.
Cllr Deere said it was a “miracle” that nobody was killed or seriously injured during a recent collision which saw a vehicle rammed into the wall of a nearby property.
He said a wall close to the river at Barrack Bridge is unstable and if a vehicle strikes the wall it is likely to topple into the water.
Cllr Deere said the council needs to take immediate action on the ‘Mickey Mouse’ roundabout.
“It’s a recipe for disaster with all the schools in the area,” he added.
The roundabout is located at a busy junction. It links the town centre to the Turlough Road and also leads to an access road for Castle Street car park. Cllr Deere said vehicles are constantly cutting across each other.
